In Overwatch, Reaper (real name Gabriel Reyes) was a senior officer in the US military. After a fight with Jack Morrison left him heavily disfigured (and Morrison turned into Soldier: 76), he resurfaced as the volatile and ruthless mercenary known as Reaper.
In the Marvel Universe, the cosmic entity Death embodies decay and destruction. The most familiar manifestation is as Mistress Death, a young woman in a dark hooded robe. Thanos falls madly in love with her and woos her by collecting as many souls as possible through the extinction of countless planets and species.
In the DC comic series The Sandman, Death is both the end of life and the guider of souls. Unlike most personifications of death, like the Grim Reaper, she is a young goth woman dressed in casual clothes who also visits people as they are born.
The Angel of Death doesn’t fit the dark cloak and scythe stereotypes we’re all used to. In fact, the bearer of bad news, or good if you’re a patient at Briarcliff, has a lot of style. From her pillbox hat to red lipstick, the Angel of Death could easily pass as a 1940’s grieving housewife if it wasn’t for the black feathered wings.
