Carbon Costume

Sandra is a character from the 2003 Tim Burton film Big Fish, and is played by Alison Lohman. The film Big Fish is based off of the original book by Daniel Wallace. It follows Edward Bloom who has grown old and fallen ill. His son travels to visit him and hears magical stories about his life, and finds the truth behind them. In this, he also tells the story of how he met Sandra, his love interest in the story and how he won her over.

Sandra wears lots of airy and southern style dresses and skirts, that are in bright and pastel colors. The iconic ruched light blue dress is probably the most recognizable of her costumes in the film that stands out beautifully against the field of yellow daffodils that Edward created for her. All of the lace detailing over layers of tulle adds to the southern look, as this takes place in Alabama. Add a bouquet of yellow daffodils to tie together the costume.

Veralidaine Sarrasri, known more commonly as Daine or the Wildmage, is the main character of Tamora Pierce’s fantasy series The Immortals.  Daine has powerful wild magic and can both exert her will over animals and communicate with them.  She has brown curly hair.  For costume inspiration, look to some of the book covers of Pierce’s novels.  Whether you decide to don a blouse and trousers with riding boots and a tunic or vest, or opt for a flowing dress, you can’t go wrong with an outfit inspired by Medieval and Renaissance silhouettes that lends itself to the fantastic settings of Galla and Tortall.

Nimona is the eponymous protagonist of Nimona, a fantasy graphic novel written by ND Stevenson (who you may recall as the creator of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.) Nimona is a young, feisty shapeshifter who allies with villain Ballister Blackheart to destroy the Institute. Despite his strong code of ethics, Nimona will do anything to come out victorious. An animated Netflix adaptation will debut in the summer of 2023.

In Slumberland, Flip (Jason Momoa) is an eccentric outlaw who helps the young girl Nema traverse dreamworlds and escape nightmares with the hope she can find see her late father again.

Zelena (played by Rebecca Mader) is a character on the ABC fantasy series Once Upon a Time.  Based on the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz, Zelena is the half-sister of Regina Mills.  To dress like Zelena, you’ll want to focus on a lot of upscale-looking black layers.  She’s a big fan of statement hats and fancy gloves.  You can’t go wrong with a long black dress or skirt as part of your look.  If you decide to emulate her more viridian appearance, be sure to get high quality body paint that won’t rub off on your clothes.

Jim Lake, Jr. (voiced by Anton Yelchin and Emile Hirsch) is the main character of the Netflix film Trollhunters.  Jim is the first human Trollhunter and is the wielder of Excalibur.  It takes some time for Jim to work up the courage to tell his friend Claire about his crush on her, but eventually, it works and the two end up dating.  In his human form, Jim wears slim fit jeans, high top sneakers, and a blue jacket with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows.  While using the Amulet of Daylight, Jim sports a full suit of armor.

Almond is the younger sister of Cucumber in the webcomic series Cucumber Quest. Confident and strong, her skills with a sword make her the best fighter in her party.  Almond has long brown hair she wears in braided pigtails, with pink flowers secured at the top.  She also wears a brown dress with puffy sleeves and dark brown tights.  To recreate her look, seek out historical-looking dresses with cuts that harken back to Renaissance and Victorian silhouettes.  Don’t forget her long bunny ears and trusted sword to complete the look!

Cucumber (or Cuco) is the main protagonist of the webcomic Cucumber Quest and the older brother of Almond.  Cuco and his sister are anthropomorphic rabbits from Dreamside who set out on a quest to save the world from the Nightmare Knight.  Cuco has short ginger hair and rabbit ears, he wears an outfit consisting of a green sweater, pants, shoes, and backpack.  Finding an exact replica of Cuco’s sweater could prove difficult, but layering a darker sweater over a lighter green turtleneck can evoke a similar look.  Rather than wield a sword like his sister, Cuco prefers to use magic with the Disaster Stone Wand.
