Rex Splode from Invincible

Rex Splode is a character in the animated and comic book series, Invincible. As a child, he was taken away and enhanced with the ability to change molecules to make any object explosive. He has a pretty intolerable personality, and rightfully gets put in his place by Monster Girl. However, they make amends and form a friendship, to which Robot thinks they are flirting — thus using Rex’s DNA to emulate a human form. Creepy. Jason Mantzoukas, who has made appearances in various NBC sitcoms such as The Good Place, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Parks and Rec, voices this character in the show now streaming on Amazon Prime.

Mary Tudor from The Tudors

Mary Tudor from The Tudors

Long before she was Bloody Mary, Mary Tudor was just the daughter of a king. A daughter pushed aside by her father when her mother fell out of favor. Then further still when first a sister and then a brother were born. Sarah Bolger plays her to perfection on “The Tudors”.  And though the show doesn’t go on long enough to see the tyrant Mary would become, Bolger does an amazing job showing how a sweet girl can turn into the woman now remembered as Bloody Mary.

To copy her look, or something close to it, you’ll need a Tudor gown. Since the fashions of Mary’s day hinged on small details and intricate work that is expensive to reproduce, the gown above is simpler than something she would have worn but it is a similar style. The white socks and red flats aren’t period-accurate but they’re close enough while still being versatile pieces that can transition into other cosplays. And of course Mary would never be caught without her rosary. Finally a long brown wig and a regal red Tudor necklace complete the look.

Mary Beth from The Book of Life

Mary Beth from The Book of Life

Sometimes a tour guide is just a tour guide. But sometimes she’s a little bit more. Sometimes she is Mary Beth, the narrator of the movie The Book of Life with an extra secret hidden up her sleeve.

Mary Beth’s costume is really straightforward, made of great foundational pieces that can be repurposed for other cosplays pretty easily. Best of all it’s comfortable enough to wear through a whole day at a convention. Just don’t go wearing it into any local museums and you should be fine.

All you need are blue heels, a blue cap, a blue blazer, a white skirt, a white shirt, and a white neckerchief. Finish it off with a long red wig and you’re ready to weave your own tale about The Book of Life.

Amity Blight's Grom Outfit from The Owl House

Amity Blight’s Grom Outfit from The Owl House

Amity Blight (voiced by the delightful Mae Whitman) isn’t one of Luz Noceda’s biggest fans. At least not at the start of the series. But by the time Grom rolls around she’s had a change of heart. And when Luz needs her most, Amity is there.

While Grom might sound like Prom, fashion on the Boiling Isles are a little different Rather than a long flowing gown Amity opts for a light purple undershirt with puffed sleeves, a darker purple vest over the top, and a knee-length skirt somewhere in between. Her socks match her shirt and come up to her ankles while her shoes are a little shorter than that and more closely match her vest. However that color is very hard to find and black boots are very close in color.

To finish her look you need accessories in addition to her main outfit. Her vest has a pink teardrop shape which you can recreate using fabric paint. A green wig and pointy ears give you that Boil Isles look while black triangle earrings are her only real accessory. Finally, when all is said and done, you may want a Grom crown all your own.
