Women
Marnie Piper
Marnie Piper (Kimberly J. Brown) is the protagonist of the Halloweentown movies from Disney Channel. Upon discovering her grandmother Aggie Cromwell (Debbie Reynolds) is a witch, she sneaks onto the magical bus to Halloweentown, full of other supernatural creatures. The first film deals with an evil warlock named Kalabar, and the second on the revenge of his son, where Marnie must stop them both. The third movie revolves around Marnie bringing students from Halloweentown to high school in the mortal world. There’s a fourth movie too, but we don’t talk about it. Throughout the saga, Marnie steps into her power as an headstrong, independent witch. Iron or sew on the moon and star appliques to the hat and cloak as shown in the picture. A second option could be to cut the shapes out of silver foil, as the material looks rather shiny. For some extra magic, add silver trim to the lining of the cloak.
Beth Harmon from The Queen’s Gambit
In the Netflix miniseries The Queen’s Gambit, Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy) is chess prodigy troubled by an orphaned upbringing who rises to the highest ranks of the chess world while struggling with drug and dependency issues. As Beth grows and changes, her fashion style follows suit. But throughout, her gorgeous 1960s clothes keep a chess motif, including black and white palette and a chessboard pattern. By the end of the series, her outfit mirrors the white queen.
Moira Rose from Schitt’s Creek
Moira Rose (played by Catherine O’Hara) is the wife of Johnny and mother of David and Alexis on the Canadian sitcom Schitt’s Creek. Moira is an ex-soap star, and her fashion sense is as quirky and eccentric as her personality, making her a fun character to emulate. To recrate some of Moira’s iconic looks, you’ll need to be bold in your layering to achieve the appearance of the high-end pieces she often sports. For instance, a pair of cutout leggings over sheer black tights can evoke the same feel as the expensive Proenza Schouler tights she wears in the third picture.
Liz Sherman from Hellboy
Liz Sherman (played to acclaim by Selma Blair) is the pyrotechnic female lead in Hellboy. She largely plays the role of Hellboy’s long-time love interest but her reach extends much further than that. Her abilities make her incredibly dangerous – dangerous enough to take out demi-demon monsters with a penchant for resurrection – but she herself is a peaceful and kind-hearted person.
Liz sports two looks throughout the movie. The first is an all-black look of boots, pants, a loose-fitting sweater, a peacoat, a scarf, and a beret. Accessories for this outfit can be an Americano (no cream or sugar) and a Polaroid camera. Her other look is a set of plain red scrubs seen after she is tricked into setting fire to her asylum by Rasputin’s magic. They are both very basic looks that are still classic Liz Sherman.
Tutar Sagdiyev from Borat 2
In Borat 2 (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan), Tutar Sagdiyet (Maria Bakalova) is Borat’s 15 year old daughter, who escapes from her barn in Kazakhstan, smuggles herself in a crate with a chimp, and follows Borat to Texas. Initially she’s unkempt and resembles a McPoyle, but gets a makeover in order to attend debutante ball. Tutar’s fresh look is enough to seduce Rudy Giuliani in a hotel room in minutes.
Katherine Plumber from Newsies
Katherine Plumber is a character in Disney’s Broadway musical, Newsies. She is a young journalist who writes the article that gets the Newsies in the paper. She becomes close with Jack Kelly, the leader of the July Newsboys strike, and they develop a romance. Her outfit retains the style of the early 1900s, which is when the actual strike took place. Notable actresses who portrayed Katherine include Stephanie Styles and Kara Lindsay.
Anya from Anastasia (Musical)
Anya is the protagonist of the Broadway musical Anastasia. As in the movie of the same name, Anya remembers nothing about her past. She meets Dmitry and Vlad while trying to get tickets for Paris. Plotting to steal money from the Dowager Empress, who is looking for her granddaughter, the two men take her in, and select her as their Anastasia impostor. While teaching Anya how to pretend, she discovers who she really is, and also falls for Dmitry. With the music box, Anya remembers her family lullaby, “Once Upon a December,” and realizes that she’s actually Anastasia. At the end of the musical, she reunites with the Empress and donates the reward money to charity. She also gets with Dmitry and they leave Paris together. Christy Altomare originated the role of Anastasia on Broadway at the Broadhurst Theater.
Becky from Sin City
In Sin City, Becky (played by Alexis Bledel) is a working girl in Old Town. She has just started working the street and is new to the game. We find out she has mostly been doing sex work to support her mom. Becky’s downfall is caring about her own well being more than the well of others. Her naive nature also allows her to be manipulated by the mobsters. She ends up making a deal with a Wallenquist for her mother’s protection in exchange for the lives of Gail, another working girl, and Dwight McCarthy an affiliate. She confesses to be a traitor and her justice is later served by the other girls. Becky dresses in almost all leather with a light pink corset like top. Her most notable style choice is her heavy jewelry with layered crosses.
Nancy Green from Big City Greens
Nancy Green (voiced by Wendi McLendon-Covey) is the ex-wife of Bill Green and mother of Tilly and Cricket, the main characters of Big City Greens. She is a hardcore animal rights activist who has been arrested several times for releasing animals from their cages in factory farms.
Nancy has a very simple look even when she’s not in her pajamas like the picture above. She wears a leather biker jacket and leather boots (both of which are fake leather as Nancy likes to point out) along with a cropped purple tank top and jeans. A black leather belt with a large belt buckle finish her look while her curly red hair is her signature.
Dani Clayton from The Haunting of Bly Manor
Dani Clayton (played by Victoria Pedretti) is the protagonist of Mike Flanagan’s Netflix horror mini series The Haunting of Bly Manor. Dani is a young American hired by a rich British businessman to care for his niece and nephew, Flora and Miles, at their family estate in the country. The children have recently been orphaned and lost their last governess to suicide. The framing of the story begins in 2007, but the events depicted in the series take place in 1987, allowing for lots of fun era-appropriate wardrobe choices in order to emulate Dani’s style.
