Sylvester the Cat from Looney Tunes
Sylvester J. Pussycat, Sr. (originally voiced by Mel Blanc) is one of the Looney Tunes. A black and white cat, Sylvester has a lisp and uses the catchphrase, “Sufferin’ succotash,” often during his skirmishes with Tweety Bird. To recreate Sylvester’s look, you have a few choices. Replica costumes do exist which include a full-head mask designed to closely resemble the cartoon character. Pair this with white animal paw gloves and slippers to complete the look. Alternately, if full-face masks aren’t your thing, you could use a black and white onesie with the same gloves and slippers, and simply add a black and white cat tail and ears to your costume. As long as you take the time to memorize Sylvester’s signature phrase, there will be no doubt which cat you’re trying to emulate.
Sparks from SuperKitties
Sparks (voiced by Cruz Flateau) is one of the four main protagonists of the Disney Junior animated series SuperKitties. Sparks uses many high-tech devices and is considered the brains of the superhero squad. Sparks is a yellow and white cat, which you can use a set of yellow ears and tail to mimic. His supersuit is purple as well as his eyes mask, and his look is completed with blue boots, blue gloves, and a blue belt.
Kitty from Battle Kitty
Battle Kitty is the main character in the Netflix series of the same name. The show follows the adventures of Kitty in a futuristic-medieval world with his friend Orc. But don’t let his adorable appearance fool you. With magical bows and a feisty attitude, he aims to become a great warrior champion. Use the black eyeliner to draw on cat whiskers.
Cat Noir from Miraculous Ladybug
Marie from the Aristocats
Marie is a character in the Disney film, The Aristocats. She is the only female kitten of Duchess, and a sister to Berlioz and Toulouse. She is very feminine and makes an effort to appear ladylike. While this attitude makes her quite prissy and spoiled, she has fun playing with her brothers. A hopeless romantic and daydreamer, Marie frequently gets lost in her thoughts, sighing deeply. Pair this inspired look with a pair of white knee socks and shoes, and you’ll be ready to see Paris! For an added feline touch, draw whiskers on with black liquid liner and apply pink blush to your nose.
Catra from She-Ra and the Princesses of Power
“Hey Adora.” When you hear Catra purr this phrase, you know trouble is brewing. Catra is a main character in the Netflix animated series, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. She began as a Horde soldier alongside Adora, and the two developed a close friendship. However, she was always possessive and jealous, especially due to Shadow Weaver’s favoritism. When Adora leaves to join the Rebellion, Catra tries to bring her back, but to no avail. The thought of losing her best friend for good causes Catra to lash out, consumed by anger, grief, and sadness. She taunts the Princesses, especially She-Ra, and revels in her evil doings. But even as the new Force Captain and eventually Hordak’s second in command, she feels dejected and questions her motivations. After briefly becoming an agent of Horde Prime, Catra realizes her mistakes and confesses her love to Adora. At the end of the series, Adora and Catra become girlfriends.
Nyan Cat
2021 marks the tenth birthday of the one of the internet’s most beloved memes: Nyan Cat. Also called “the Pop-Tart Cat” or the “flying rainbow cat”, Christopher Torres created Nyan Cat as part of a donation drive for the Red Cross on his website LOL-Comics. It’s since faced some controversy as people tried to use Nyan Cat without permission. But its viral status is as enduring as the comic is cute!
Pop-Tart costumes are unfortunately hard to come by unless you can find an adult one on Etsy. Your best bet is a quick bit of DIY following this simple tutorial.
1. Measure the length of your Pop Tart, starting at the top of your shoulder and going down whatever length you want the costume to be. Add on an inch and a half for gluing and cutting mistakes, then purchase enough tan felt to cover the length twice (so you can make a front and back). Use this same measurement to buy the light pink felt, but only buy enough for one side. Add in a glue gun and hot pink felt dots to finish up the DIY shopping.
2. Cut the tan fabric in half width wise so you have the front and back of your costume.
3. Mark out how large a space you need for your head to fit through the top of the costume. Put a pin on either side of this head hole, then glue the top edges together, except the space where your head will go. Repeat this process on the sides while leaving holes for your arms.
4. Put a piece of cardboard between the front and back of your costume, then lay the pink fabric on the front. Trim it down so that a “crust” is visible around all edges of the pink felt. Glue the pink fabric down to the tan, making sure cardboard separates the front and back of the costume in any place you add glue.
5. Glue on the hot pink circles as sprinkles and glue your tail to your costume (on the side or at the back depending on how you want to interpret the meme). That’s it!
With your Pop Tart done, use a face painting kit to add in your cat features. Put on your ears and the grey underclothes, then slide into your pop tart. Grab a rainbow scarf to trail behind you and you are set! May you bring as much joy to your convention as Nyan Cat does to the internet!
Raymond from Animal Crossing
Raymond is a character in the video game Animal Crossing: New Horizons. He is a smug cat villager, whose name means “advice” or “council giver.” He gets along with most other villagers, but he comes across as snooty and egotistical. As indicated by his business attire, Raymond is rather strict, and prefers neatness and precision. These qualities are exemplified in Pocket Camp, where he later appears. In addition, he has the nature hobby.
Puss In Boots from Shrek
Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) is a main character in the Shrek movies. Based on the fairytale as well as Zorro, he first appears in the sequel as a mercenary sent by the king to assassinate Shrek. However he ends up befriending him and becoming his ally. Puss in Boots is known to overpower enemies by distracting them with his “cute kitten” face. Despite his wit and sword skills, he acts like an ordinary cat. In particular, he is known to cough up hairballs. For makeup, you can use orange and white face paint. You can draw on his whiskers with a white eye pencil.
