Christian from Moulin Rouge! The Musical
Much like his movie counterpart, the musical’s Christian is driven by love and by a sense of wonder in the world that many around him no longer share. His outcome is no less tragic and his loss no less heartbreaking than his movie counterpart, but he brings a different energy to the dynamic of Moulin Rouge that is unforgettable.
Christian’s writing may be hard to reproduce but his style is a wonderful closet cosplay. Button front slacks and a linen button down under a dark vest make up the majority of the costume. Finish off the look with a neck scarf and Oxford-style ankle boots. You’ll be the toast of the Moulin Rouge and all of the pieces can transfer easily to other costumes.
Gretchen Wieners in Mean Girls the Musical
“Come sit with us tomorrow, it’ll be fetch!” Gretchen Wieners is a character in the Mean Girls musical. She is a part of the Plastics as the right-hand woman to Regina George. In “Meet The Plastics,” Gretchen sings about how she will do anything to maintain Regina’s popularity. She loves to gossip, but she’s actually quite sweet. When Cady joins the Plastics, she doesn’t have ulterior motives. In the musical, Gretchen confides in Cady that because of the crumbling friendship with Regina, she’s lost all confidence in herself. This leads to her solo song “What Is Wrong With Me?” Ashley Park originated the role of Regina on Broadway until Krystina Alabado took her place.

She becomes frustrated with her father’s overprotective nature and his refusal to accept Benny as her lover.
Piragua Guy from In The Heights

He’s portrayed by none other than Lin Manuel-Miranda, who both wrote the musical and originated the role of Usnavi on Broadway. The song “Piragua” was going to be cut from the movie adaptation until Lin stepped in to play the role. You may recognize Ramos from his role in Hamilton, where he starred alongside Lin Manuel-Miranda, who composed and wrote both shows. In addition, Manuel-Miranda originated the role of Usnavi on Broadway.
Blind Mag from Repo! The Genetic Opera
Sarah Brightman is best known for her music but she’s also taken a turn as an actress, most notably as Blind Mag in “Repo! The Genetic Opera”. An opera singer under a lifelong contract for the use of her bionic eyes.
The film has a very specific aesthetic and Mag’s costume is an excellent example of it. Large fake lashes, black lipstick, face paint, and white body paint copy her ghostly coloring while black thigh high boots, black fishnets, a black choker, and black wig make up the details of her look.
A little DIY is needed for the main portion of Mag’s outfit. Red and black feathers can be glued around the top and bottom of a black corset using Fabric Fusion glue. And though she doesn’t technically wear one in the film, a short black athletic skirt worn underneath the bottom feathers gives you more space to attach the feathers too and offers more coverage. Finally, a gauzy black shawl mimics the last of her costume.
