Brandt from The Big Lebowski
In The Big Lebowski, Philip Seymour Hoffman plays Brandt, Jeffrey Lebowski’s personal assistant. Brandt is often tasked with delivering important messages for Lebowski and is the go-between for him and the Dude as they attempt to smooth out the misunderstanding that propels the film forward. Brandt wears classic grey suits and geometric-patterned ties that were extremely popular in the 1990s.
The Stranger from The Big Lebowski
In the Coen Brother’s film The Big Lebowski, The Stranger (played by Sam Elliott) is the narrator of the film. He appears at the beginning, middle, and end, and even speaks with The Dude at the bowling alley bar while sipping on a sarsaparilla. The Stranger is dressed like a relatively run-of-the-mill cowboy, but Sam Elliott’s trademark mustache really helps solidify the character as something special.
Donny Kerabatsos from The Big Lebowski
Theodore Donald “Donny” Kerabatsos (played by Steve Buscemi) is a member of the same bowling team as the Dude and Walter. A soft spoken man, Donny is often told to shut up impolitely by Walter prior to his death in the film. Despite being an exceptional bowler, Donny is often seen wearing what appear to be secondhand bowling shirts, as he dons a colorful array, each with a different name embroidered on it (none of which are Donny). If you have some modest sewing skills, you could add your own personal flourish to whichever color shirt you choose to wear for your costume.
Bunny Lebowski from The Big Lebowski
Bunny Lebowski (played by Tara Reid) is the wife of Jeffrey Lebowski in The Big Lebowski and a huge source of frustration for Brandt, as she flirts heavily with the Dude. She is a former runaway and porn star with a shopping problem that puts her into very deep debt. To recreate Bunny’s outfit, you’ll need to tap into your very rad ’90s side, as she favors neon green and very small bikinis. Of course, depending on your comfort level, there are many ways you can channel the same vibe while covering up a little more. Don’t forget your green toe polish, as Bunny’s little toe plays a big role in the film.
Maude Lebowski from The Big Lebowski
In the Coen Brothers’ film The Big Lebowski, Maude Lebowski (played by Julianne Moore) is a provocative avant-garde artist and the daughter of Jeffrey Lebowski. She is highly critical of her father’s relationship with Bunny, and is the person responsible for the Dude losing his rug. During their initial real life interaction, Maude is seen wearing a long olive green robe, and later, she dons a gold Viking valkyrie costume in one of the Dude’s dreams. When crafting your Maude costume, you will need to decide whether the silhouette or the color of her robe are more important to you, as it can be very difficult to find one that does both. Adding additional props and touches to a fabricated Maude Viking costume can help bring your costume to the next level.
Jesus Quintana from The Big Lebowski
In The Big Lebowski, Jesus Quintana (played by John Turturro) is a bowler who competes against the Dude, Walter, and Donny. Jesus’ personality is flamboyant and over-the-top, highlighted by his bright purple wardrobe. While Jesus wears a one-piece purple jumpsuit, a similar look can be created using track pants and a polo shirt, while allowing for greater comfort and ease when nature calls. If you have to go against someone in bowling it might as well be “The Jesus”. His choice of jumpsuits and bowling ball shining skills make him, at the very least, an entertaining opponent.
Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski
Jeffrey Lebowski (Jeff Bridges), or as he would prefer to be called, the Dude, is an avid bowler and otherwise total slacker. He gets caught up in a kidnapping scheme after getting confused with millionaire Jeffrey Lebowski. That sweater really ties the outfit together, Dude.
Walter Sobchak from The Big Lebowski
In The Big Lebowski, Walter Sobchak (played by John Goodman) is a Vietnam veteran with a temper who is on the same bowling team as the Dude and Donny. It’s hard to decide whether you want Walter on your side or if you want to stay away from him. With his military vest and random weapons, Walter is ready to go to war over anything. He’ll even take you out over a game of bowling. Walter is the Dude’s best friend, though his tendency to use his pistol to settle an argument can be stressful for the Dude’s pacifist nature. Walter often talks down to Donny, but when Donny dies, Walter takes the initiative to try and spread his ashes at the beach. Some of the most iconic pieces of Walter’s costume include his yellow aviators, tan vest, and his pistol. If you don’t have an old metal Folgers can lying around in your basement or garage, a metal urn shaped like a coffee can will certainly do the trick.
