Voiced by Charlie Tahan, Tim Burton’s Victor brings a youthful wide-eyed spin on the classic mad scientist from Mary Shelley’s classic novel. After all it’s much easier to sympathize with a little by who wants his dog back than a madman bent on defying the laws of nature!

Victor channels a bit of the original Frankenstein’s mad scientist style with his robes and goggles. But the clothes he wears underneath are more modern. A grey button down, black pants, black belt, and black shoes make up the core of the outfit while a short black wig rounds it out. Grey face paint or dusky makeup can recreate the vibe that you’ve stepped out of a black and white movie. And of course you’ll need your very own Frankenweenie!

In Tim Burton’s universe, Winona Ryder has a way of bringing to life girls that are special mix of sweet and sharp. Elsa van Helsing is no exception. She cares deeply for the people in her life but she’s not exactly a fan of the fluff and frippery that others seem to like.

Elsa’s appearance is a great example of this. She wears her black hair up in long pigtails and opts for a high-neck shirt, a dark pinafore dress, grey tights, and black shoes. You can also use grey face paint if you want to go for the “stepped out of a black and white movie” look. You can also use dusky makeup colors to create a similar look without going for full-face coverage. And of course you’ll want a stuffed poodle to play the part of your very own Persephone

In the stop motion series Joshua Jones, the titular character is a cheerful fellow who lives on his canal boat Delilah with his canine companion Fairport. Together they ride up and down Clearwater Canal, making deliveries, doing odd jobs, and helping others in need on occasion.

In Kubo and the Two Strings, Kubo (Art Parkinson) is a young musician with the unearthly ability to transform simple paper into animated origami creations with the power of music. He supports his ailing, widowed mother by entertaining crowds in the marketplace by playing his stringed Shimasen instrument, but he always has to be home before nightfall. The day he breaks that rule, he embarks on a supernatural adventure where he learns about the true magical power of family and friendship.

Atari Kobayashi (Koyu Rankin) is the human protagonist of the 2018 Wes Anderson film Isle of Dogs. He is a young Japanese boy who travels to Trash Island to look for his lost guard dog Spots. This is a good costume for younger kids or anyone who loves dogs.

In Corpse Bride, Emily (voiced by Helena Bonham Carter) is an undead bride who pursues Victor Van Dort after he inadvertently proposes to her. Despite the differences in their mortality, Emily manages to convince Victor to end his life so that they can marry in the Land of the Dead.

The Boxtrolls are a highly misunderstood group of subterranean-dwelling creatures. And if you’re Eggs (voiced by Isaac Hempstead-Wright), well then you’re even more misunderstood as a boy living as a Boxtroll. With a penchant for mechanics and gadgets, the Boxtrolls find themselves being hunted by the town’s elite, and it’s up to Eggs to save them.
