Bella Baxter from Poor Things
Bella Baxter (played by Emma Stone) is the main character of Yorgos Lanthimos’ film Poor Things. Reanimated by Dr. Godwin Baxter, Bella is eager to learn all there is to know and embarks on an adventure to do just that with a lawyer named Duncan Wedderburn. Bella has long black hair and is often awkward or unorthodox in her movements and speech. She wears many fantastical costumes throughout the film, including a long dusty pink skirt with a ruffle blouse and white shoes, a black puff sleeve jacket with grey socks and black boots, and yellow shorts with the same ruffled blouse and a puff sleeve cropped jacket. If you can’t find an exact match for some of her more outrageous costume pieces, don’t be afraid to find something similar. Complete your look with a long black wig and black eyebrow pencil.
Erika from Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper
Erika is one of the two main characters in the 2004 animated Barbie movie, Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper. Both roles are played by Barbie. Erika is the “pauper” character in contrast to Princess Anneliese. Although she works to pay off her parents’ debt at the dress supplier for the palace, Erika dreams of becoming a singer and traveling the world. Upon a chance meeting, Anneliese and Erika learn that they are identical, and impersonate each other to fulfill their wishes. After falling in love and marrying King Dominick, she becomes Queen Erika.
Kermit the Frog from The Great Muppet Caper
The Great Muppet Caper sees everyone’s favorite muppet, Kermit the Frog (voiced by Jim Henson), as a reporter who travels to London with his identical twin brother Fozzie Bear to investigate a jewel thief. Gonzo joins as their photographer. Kermit maintains his signature bipedal frog appearance, green skin and all. However, his reporter personality shines through in his costume, which consists of a beige trilby hat and matching trench coat over striped trousers, a button down shirt, and a blue bow tie. You’ll need some double-sided tape to help keep your hat on your Kermit mask. Complete the look with green gloves and shoes.
Hayden Christensen from Revenge of the Sith (BTS)
Hayden Christensen appears in behind-the-scenes footage in the Darth Vader costume during the filming of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. Revenge of the Sith is Episode III and takes place three years into the Clone Wars, and we follow Anakin as he embraces the Dark Side. This look in particular would make such a fun and niche costume or cosplay that others may not think of, and dedicated fans might recognize.
The costume features the iconic Darth Vader costume, but without the helmet. Instead of the helmet, Hayden wears a black Nike sweatband on his head.
Pooh from Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey
After Winnie-the-Pooh entered the public domain on January 1, 2022, Rhys Frake-Waterfield set out to write, produce, and direct a gory horror film based on the property. In Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, an adult Christopher Robin returns to Hundred Acre Wood after a 5 year absence. He finds the land desolate and the creatures starving and feral. Pooh and Piglet ambush Christopher and his wife, dragging them into the woods.
Mickey from Mickey’s Mouse Trap
With Disney’s copyright on the classic cartoon Steamboat Willie expiring, creators wasted no time taking advantage. On the very day the Mickey Mouse short entered the public domain – January 1, 2024 – a trailer for a horror slasher called Mickey’s Mouse Trap dropped, continuing the tradition of the previous year’s Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey. In the film, a killer masked as Mickey Mouse (Simon Phillips) stalks victims at a late-night birthday party in an amusement park. To take your costume from mascot to monster, cut out or black out the eye holes of your rubber Mickey mask.
Lizzy from Showing Up
Lizzy is the protagonist in the film Showing Up, and is played by Michelle Williams. Lizzy is an introverted art student and a sculptor who is preparing for her exhibition as she struggles with finding balance with her creative work and everyday struggles, and the unexpected friend she finds in a pigeon she nurses back to health.
Lizzy’s costumes match her personality perfectly and are just like those of an art student. They feature very soft and muted colors, like her look with her canvas apron, blue shirt and khaki skirt. For her exhibition she dresses up more with a brown skirt and printed blouse. If you’re wearing this as a costume, taking a pigeon stuffed animal or prop and carrying it in a box could be a fun addition.
Damian in Mean Girls (2024)
Damian is a character in Mean Girls. Witty and outspoken, Damian is a social “outcast” alongside his best friend, Janis. They take pity on Cady and show her the ropes of high school. He plays a major role in the revenge plan against Regina George. Jaquel Spivey will portray Damian in the 2024 remake, based on the original movie and Broadway musical of the same name with a Gen Z twist. Fortunately, they kept his iconic sunglasses and blue hoodie – “she doesn’t even go here!”
Nora from Past Lives
Nora is a character from the romance-drama film Past Lives, and is played by Greta Lee. Past Lives follows two childhood friends named Hae Sung and Nora who were separated when Nora’s family emigrated from South Korea. For a week they are reunited as they contemplate what life could’ve been if different choices were made.
The costumes in this film are simple ones but intentional. To dress like Nora Lee, wear a white button down shirt, wide leg khaki pants, white running shoes, and a black bag. Another look is a navy blue printed blouse.
Regina George in Mean Girls (2024)
Regina George is the main antagonist of Mean Girls. As the most popular girl in school, Regina reigns supreme as the leader of the Plastics. She wrote the Burn Book, a journal of snide comments and secrets about fellow classmates. She invites Cady to join the Plastics, and at first she seems nice. Yet she reveals herself as evil and manipulative when she gets back with Aaron Samuels – who she knows Cady was crushing on. This sets the wheels in motion for revenge against Regina. Renee Rapp will portray Regina in the 2024 remake, based on the original movie and Brodway musical of the same name with a Gen Z twist. Renee Rapp previously portrayed Regina on Broadway in 2019.
