Kicks from Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Kicks is one of the wandering merchants that show up on your island at random in the game Animal Crossing: New Horizons. He sets himself up in the town square when he arrives and stays until late that night. Kicks is a skunk, but don’t let that put you off. Because if there is one thing about him that doesn’t stink, it’s his sense of fashion! Whether it’s shoes, socks, handbags, or accessories, he’s always got the latest and greatest!

The challenge with Animal Crossing characters is deciding how much of their animal nature to include. You can copy Kicks’ look by just copying his clothes or you can use black body paint and white body paint to achieve his classic skunk markings. You will also need peach body paint to create his nose.

In both cases you will want a white wig and pomade for styling as well as a yellow driver’s cap. A cream button down shirt, tan suspenders, yellow knee pants, brown boots, and white gloves make up the rest of his outfit. If you decide to go for the animal-accurate look you will also want black ears and a skunk tail in addition to your body paint.

Isabelle from Animal Crossing: New Horizons

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Isabelle is more or less the go-to person on every island when you need something done for its inhabitants. Anything other than construction, that is. She’s generally in a happy mood and, should news run thin, eager to share the latest and greatest news in television shows.

There are a few ways that you can achieve Isabelle’s look. The first way uses body paint to mimic the color of Isabelle’s fur. It can be applied to your face, neck, hands, arms, and legs. The other option is to use blush on your cheeks to mimic Isabelle’s blush but otherwise skip over her fur with the exception of yellow leggings. You can also add ears and a tail to both looks since Isabelle is a dog-type villager.

Regardless of which look you choose, you will want to use a blonde wig for the ponytail on top of her head, a pink button down, a white skirt, and black shoes. Isabelle’s shirt is a Nook Inc. branded shirt which might be hard to find. But a bleach pen and a little DIY can turn a basic pink button down into your very own Nook Inc. merchandise. It’ll be the last piece of the perfect Isabelle cosplay!

Midna from Zelda

Midna from Zelda

Midna (voiced by Akiko Koumoto) is the former leader of the Twili people. She made her debut on The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for the Nintendo Gamecube and Wii. Though her people are known for wielding great magic she has been stripped of hers and – for most of the franchise – is trapped in her imp form. Both her imp form and her true form make for excellent cosplay costumes!

For her imp form you will want to find a custom cosplay headpiece from Etsy. Worn over a yellow spiked wig it gives you the most iconic part of her appearance. From there face paint and a light blue body suit modified with black fabric paint gives you the rest of her look.

If you want to cosplay her true form you will need a ginger wig that you style in the unique manner Midna prefers to wear it. A black bikini top , black wrap skirt, and black cloak finish off her clothing. You can use body paint to achieve the blue-skinned look of her concept art or you can choose to stick with your natural skin tone if body paint is not appealing!

Super Mario Bros from NES

Super Mario Brothers from NES

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the first Super Mario Bros. game on the Nintendo Entertainment System. To mark the occasion, Nintendo is releasing a slew of Mario games, including Super Mario 3D All-Stars and a modern version of its original Game & Watch handheld. Although we’ve provided costume guides for Mario and Luigi already, you’ll notice that their sprites are slightly different compared to their original release, where they wore color-coded overalls and a rust brown shirt instead of the more familiar blue overalls and color-coded undershirts.

Ashley from WarioWare

Ashley from WarioWare

Ashley (most recently voice by Erica Lindbeck) is a witch-in-training that largely appears in the Wario games. She makes a few appearances in other Nintendo franchises like Super Smash Bros. but for the most part she is a character in Wario minigames. Her interests are almost solely related to becoming a better witch while her demon friend, Red, takes care of most everything else.

Cosplaying as Ashley is thankfully more straight-forward than her magic spells are! You need a long black wig that you style into pigtails. A little orange ha and an orange neck scarf with a skull brooch act as accessories while a red dress, black tights, and red shoes make up the outfit. A little stuffed demon finishes off the costume as your very own Red!

wario warioware character

Wario from WarioWare

Wario is the main antagonist to Mario and the star of his own spin-off games called WarioWare. These games involve microgames that the player must complete in order to preserve their lives. Additionally these games often have a theme associated with the title and characters. Use a piece of red duct tape down the middle of the helmet. For added detail, you can paint a ‘W’ with light blue paint. If you want to go extra mile, you can paint the nose pink and even get a cleft chin prosthetic.

Medli from Legend of Zelda - The Wind Waker

Medli from Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

Medli is a young, kindhearted Rito (bird person) living on Dragon Roost Island. She befriends Link on his oft-sidetracked quest to rescue his little sister during the events of The Wind Waker, and assists him in her capacity as the apprentice caretaker of Valoo the dragon. When I first saw this character while playing The Wind Waker for the first time, I immediately fell in love with her cute aesthetic and kindhearted nature. Naturally, I had to recreate her costume!

Gulliver from Animal Crossings New Horizons

Gulliver from Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Gulliver is the hapless castaway that sometimes appears on the shores of your island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. He has a tendency to fall asleep on the deck of his ship and roll overboard. When you fin him you have to help collect the pieces of his communicator so he can call his crew for a pick-up.

Dressing as Gulliver is a little tricky given that he’s a bird. White pants and white gloves help give you the appearance of all-over white feathers. You can add white wings or use a white shawl to mimic Gulliver’s wings depending on your preference. Yellow duck feet give you the webbed look of Gulliver but you can also use yellow rain boots for a more human look. Similarly, you can use a false bill or leave it off.

To really capture Gulliver’s look though you need a sailor’s cap and shirt. A few pieces of circuitry make for a great accessory to finish off the costume.

Harvey from Animal Crossings New Horizons

Harvey from Animal Crossing: New Horizons

In Animal Crossing: New Horizon, Harvey is the kind old hippie that lives on a nearby island. He runs a photo studio that is open for anyone to use and loves to have people come visit him to do their own shoots.

To cosplay as Harvey you’ll want to practice a laid back and slightly hazy way of doing things. That’s the real key to being Harvey. For his costume, though, you’ll want a a long wig and a mustache. The hair simulates Harvey’s ears, though can choose to add some costume dog ears as well if you want. A brown vest with fringe, a tunic top, bell bottoms, and moccasins finish out his look. And while these accessories aren’t necessary, a camera will really round out the look.

Kid Icarus Pit

Pit from Kid Icarus

Pit is the protagonist in the Kid Icarus video games. As indicated by his wings, he is an angel. His patron deity is Palutena, and he serves as the captain of her guard. He is known for his bubbly and chipper personality, though he has no problem battling monsters twice his size. For this costume, wrap the bed sheet around your body leaving a hole for your arm. Use a reference picture of the character to lay the garment correctly on your body. Secure the sheets in place by tying the brown scarf around your waist. If you want a less DIY approach, you can alter a white toga, listed in this guide for your convenience.
