Larryboy from VeggieTales
LarryBoy is the superhero alter ego of Larry the Cucumber (voiced by Mike Nawrocki). He uses every power in his control to be the best superhero he can be. Which, generally speaking, are his plunger ears. Those and his LarryMobile which is as close to all-terrain as it can get!
Cosplaying as LarryBoy means taking a few liberties with the look. Larry is, after all, a cucumber. He has no arms or legs. You, as a human, are going to have to improvise.
To that end, use a white long sleeve lace-up shirt as his top and paint on a yellow vest and ties using fabric paint, reminiscent of Silver Age hero costumes. A pair of purple shorts worn over yellow running pants will give you the purple bottoms while still sticking to that Silver Age style. A back belt serves as a utility belt while yellow foam and silver paint can recreate his belt buckle. You can either hot glue this to your belt buckle or glue a magnet to the back of the foam, depending on how permanent you want the modification to be.
Larry’s hat is where it gets a little tricky. Plungers can be kind of heavy. But if you can find two lightweight ones, you can cut the posts down and glue them to either side of a purple mask. Purple foam and more hot glue gives you the crest of his mask while green face paint gives you the signature cucumber look. Then all you need is a pair of black hero boots to finish off your costume.
Tayce in “Memory” from RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Season 2
Tayce is a contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK season two. Known for her incredible makeup skills and fashion sense, Tayce is a fierce competitor. In the confessionals, some of her remarks have quite the edge. She was nominated as “Trade Minister” by her fellow competitors, meaning they find her the most attractive. She is currently still in the competition as a part of the top five. This outfit is from the second episode’s lip sync to “Memory” from CATS. Tayce serves this lipsync with her striking beauty and intense emotion, sending Cherry Valentine home, and making this an iconic moment in the show’s her-story.
Red Hood from Titans
HBO Max introduced Jason Todd as Red Hood in season three of their Titans show. The look was hyped for months beforehand and not just by Curran Walters, the man under the hood. Fans everywhere were dying to see what HBO would give them and they were not disappointed.
Recreating Red Hood’s look is no easy feat. And it starts with the mask. Unless you’re an experienced crafter and cosplayer, your best bet is to get one from Etsy. They tend to sell out very quickly and you might have to purchase a 3D printer pattern and have an Etsy printer run one off for you. Then, of course, you need a red zip up hoodie and a brown leather jacket. Under that you’ll want the chest piece which is pretty easily replicated with a paintball vest and fabric paint. Because the vest is black, you’ll want to paint the bat symbol first in white and then in red so the red will show up against the background. Finally, to finish off the upper layer you’ll need a pair of motorcycle gloves.
The bottom half of the costume consists of a pair of motorcycle pants, two thigh holsters, two costume pistols, a tactical belt, and a pair of brown leather work boots. Todd also has a pair of leg bracers that go down over his boots. You can purchase the leg portion premade and then fashion the section over his toes with craft foam and silver adhesive vinyl.
It’s a costume with a pretty steep level of investment. For for Red Hood fans it is worth it.
Erica Reyes
Erica Reyes (Gage Golightly) is a supporting character in MTV’s Teen Wolf. She attends Beacon Hills High School alongside the other main characters. Before being a werewolf, she used to be insecure because of her epilepsy. After having a seizure in gym class, Derek visits her in the hospital and gives her the bite. She completely transforms with a newfound confidence and a bombshell look. She has a close relationship with her fellow beta, Boyd. Despite her new feisty and flirtatious attitude, she shows vulnerability in combat. While only shown through flashbacks, Erica dies at the hands of the alpha pack in season three.
Touka Kirishima from Tokyo Ghoul
Touka Kirishima (voiced by Sora Amamiya and Brina Palencia) is a ghoul and the eventual wife of Ken Kaneki in the anime and manga series Tokyo Ghoul. Under the alias Black Dog, Kaya was the former leader of the Black Dobers, an infamous gang of ghouls who once operated out of the 20th Ward. Kaya served as older sister-like figure to Touka Kirishima. Kaya’s ghoul outfit consisted of a black doberman-like mask, long black coat with a high collar, and black leather boots.
Betty Rubble from The Flintstones
Betty Rubble stole the hearts of millions when she hit the air with the 1960 premier of The Flintstones. Her husband Barney and son Bamm-Bamm keep her busy most of the time. But when she gets a minute to herself you can probably find her with her best friend Wilma Flintstone.
Betty’s look is pretty iconic. Her dress is easily found as a ready-made costume that usually comes with a blue bow, though some dress tape might be handy for keeping the dress in the right spot. Once you have her dress all you’ll need is a black wig and a gorgeous plum lipstick to finish off her look.
If you plan on wearing the costume out, shoe can get tricky. Many people opt for black pumps given Betty is a bit of a prehistoric pinup. But there are other options such as skin-tone flats or “invisible shoes” like those in this tutorial.
Avatar Kyoshi
Kyoshi is a character in the Nickelodeon series Avatar: The Last Airbender. She was a previous Avatar who came from the Earth kingdom. She created an era of peace by vanquishing Chin the Conquerer. According to legend, she was a ruthless, fearsome warrior — who also had rather long feet! Her legacy carries on with the Dai Li, as well as the Kyoshi warriors, an all-female group who fight and defend in her honor. When applying the makeup, you can use this image of Kyoshi for reference. Use the white face paint as the base, the red face paint for the eyes, and black eyeliner for the wings and brows.
Kushina Uzumaki from Naruto
Kushina Uzumaki (voiced by Emi Shinohara and Laura Bailey) was a jonin of Konohagakure, though she originally hailed from Uzushiogakure. Kushina became a jinchuriki for the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox before the tailed beast was eventually sealed within the body of her son Naruto at the time of his birth. Kushina was known for her hot-blooded temper, often intimidating even her husband Minato, the Fourth Hokage. When not wearing her jonin uniform, Kushina wore a long green dress over a white shirt with grey shinobi sandals.
Ultraman
Ultraman crashed onto the scene in the 1960s and soon became a giant in every right. His long run of success has landed him on Netflix where a whole new audience is growing to love Ultraman and his current voice actor, Kaiji Soze.
The hardest part of Ultraman’s costume is getting the jumpsuit right. You can also start out with a silver body suit and add in the red details using fabric paint. Once it’s dry you can use a hot glue gun to attach shoe soles to the bottom of your suit. These will make it much safer (and healthier) to walk around cons in your costume. Finish the look off with his helmet and you’re ready to go!
