Star Wars: Retro vs. Reboot

Who Wore It Better? Retro vs. Reboot

Reboots have been the bread and butter of Hollywood for years. They also tend to divide fans into two camps: […]

Nicki Brand from Videodrome

Nicki Brand played by Debbie Harry in Videodrome is a sadomasochistic radio show host in Toronto. With the main protagonist Max, she watches an episode of Videodrome, an ultra-high frequency broadcast variety show featuring violence and torture. Once Nicki discovers Videodrome is being broadcast Pittsburgh she leaves Max and travels there to audition, never to return. Nicki’s outfit is a monochromatic red with chunky gold accessories. Her eyeshadow is a soft earth tone and she wears mauve colored lip gloss. This iconic outfit will surely be a unique and elegant look for any Horrorcon or Halloween party.

Rita Morgan from Dexter

Rita Morgan from Dexter

Rita Morgan – originally Rita Bennett and played by Julie Benz – was one of the main women on Dexter. She started out as Dexter’s girlfriend and was more or less a cover to make him appear more normal. Over time, however, he became protective of her and her children. Despite Dexter’s nature he even goes so far as to marry Rita. This doesn’t end well for her due to the nature of Dexter’s enemies. But before her demise she was often seen as the beacon of compassion among the often chaotic characters on the show.

Cosplaying as Rita is very straightforward. Her mannerisms make up most of her character thanks to her soft spoken ways and generally calm outlook on things. Her clothing tends to be sundresses and sandals which isn’t surprising given that she lives in Miami. And she wears her hair long, blonde, and curly.

If you want to go for a more emotional take on the character you can cosplay as a pregnant Rita. And if you’re a fan of the more shocking cosplay, you can opt for some fake blood instead to give a nod toward her end on the show.

The Three-Eyed Raven from Game of Thrones

The Three-Eyed Raven from Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones is a show full of mysterious characters. Few are as mysterious as the Three-Eyed Raven, however. Played first by Struan Rodgers and then by Max von Sydow, he is an ancient wielder of magic even older than he is. Though he walks in Bran’s mind – and through the past – he is confined in the roots of a tree and reliant on his ravens to act as his eyes and ears.

The Three-Eyed Raven is ancient enough that his concerns are well beyond the realm of fashion. And, being trapped in a tangle of roots for several hundred years, what clothes he does have are in disrepair. To recreate this look without trekking deep into a cave of your own, start with a black shroud costume. Use black “creepy cloth” wrapped around your shoulders as a shawl to add to the shroud’s tattered look.

Black medieval pants and boots go under the shroud while temporary white hair dye gives you the look of an ages-old mystic. Add some branches to your shroud and perch a raven on your shoulder to complete your costume!

Libra

Libra (September 23rd to October 22nd) is the seventh sign on the zodiac wheel ruled by the planet Venus. Libra is represented by the scales and is the cardinal air sign of the Zodiac. Libras’ most notable trait is their fixation on balance. Typically they are the friends you reach to in times of struggle due to their great listening skills and solid advice. Strangely enough one of their major flaws is when pressed for an answer they have a difficult time with decision making. This libra costume is light and airy with golden accents throughout. The costume is ideal for any Libra on Halloween.

Mr. Boddy from Clue

Mr. Boddy from Clue

Mr. John Boddy (played by Lee Ving) is – maybe? – the mastermind behind the blackmail that drives the plot of Clue. Then again he might be a butler who took the penalty his boss should have suffered. Who really knows?!

Mr. Boddy’s fashion sense, at least, is not a mystery. A combination pomade and temporary black dye will let you mimic his hair style. A black suit and faux Oxfords make up the majority of his look while a dark olive dress shirt is the final piece. Of course if you’re Mr. Boddy then you need gifts for all your party guests. So don’t forget your black boxes and decorative ribbon.

Natsumi from Non Non Biyori Repeat

Natsumi Koshigaya is filled with ideas. She often has ideas on fun things to do with her friends. Her love for fun can get her in trouble, since she is more irresponsible about her actions. She doesn’t have the best grades, but is bright when it comes to nature and activities. Natsumi plays in the countryside with her older sister Komari, and her friends, Hotaru and Renge, in Non Non Biyori Repeat.

lord farquaad shrek character

Lord Farquaad from Shrek

Lord Farquaad is the main antagonist in the first Shrek movie as well as the musical. In spite of his small stature, he is a ruthless ruler of Duloc. He banishes fairytale creatures from his kingdom so it’s a “perfect place.” In attempt to pursue and marry Princess Fiona, he sends Shrek and Donkey to rescue her from her tower. When Fiona becomes an ogre, he rejects her, but he meets his demise when the dragon eats him. If you want to get creative with the costume, try making a pair of little legs out. Slip the trousers and boots onto pool noodles or pipe, and stuff the ends of the boots with newspaper. Affix the legs to underneath the jacket, and wear a pair of black pants so the legs look believable. An easier route is to paint little legs onto the thighs of black pants. Kneel and drape the cape to hide your real legs, and the effect is complete!
