Ed Sheeran
In 2013, Ed Sheeran topped GQ‘s list of Worst-Dressed Males, but that’s just one magazine’s opinion. Ed Sheeran is an unabashedly comfortable dresser, that’s all! After breaking his elbow and wrist in a bicycling accident and bouncing back well enough to still be able to play guitar, he really deserves to dress as comfortably as possible on stage. And for those of us who disagree with GQ, here’s a handy guide for recreating Ed Sheeran’s aesthetic.
Madonna from The Virgin Tour
From the start of her decades-long career of pop stardom, Madonna embraced a scandalous, envelope-pushing image. As tame as it looks through modern eyes, Madonna’s penchant for wearing cropped tops, short skirts, and singing about “sensitive” topics like virginity raised eyebrows in the 1980s. She unabashedly titled her debut concert tour The Virgin Tour, and wore this lacy, white getup consistent that turned the culturally traditional bridal aesthetic completely on its head.
Rick Astley
Rick Astley is an English singer and songwriter who scored a #1 hit with the 1987 single “Never Gonna Give You Up”. Though he retired in 1993, he scored a comeback in 2007 with his second chart topper, a stark departure from his previous hit.
Gwen Stefani
Before there were Harajuku girls, Gwen Stefani was fronting No Doubt and setting trends for teenage girls everywhere. Pairing tomboy with girlie girl, ’90s Gwen is easy to pull off. All you need is a crop top and bright red lipstick. You can also pull out those bindis you’ve been hiding since 1995.
Ziggy Stardust
David Bowie took fashion to a new level when he unveiled his alter-ego Ziggy Stardust. Part rock star, part alien-being, it takes more than just a colorful unitard and elaborate makeup to pull off this look. You need the confidence to go along with it. Of course, it also doesn’t hurt if you can sing.
Freddie Mercury
Freddie Mercury was the frontman for Queen best known for his hits “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “Don’t Stop Me Now”, and “We Are the Champions”. Mercury was also well known for his stage performances and flamboyant outfits. If you’re feeling courageous, you could try on one of the many form fitting leotards that he wore on stage.
Robbie Hart
Robbie Hart wanted to be a rock star but life decided otherwise. Instead of ripped jeans and a leather jacket, he wound up donning a suit and tie as a professional wedding singer. Failed career or not, he was still able to get the girl and impress Billy Idol.
Rachel Berry
Rachel Berry, played by Lea Michele in Glee, is a driven yet neurotic high school glee club member, who’s single ambition is to perform on Broadway. She places gold star stickers after her signature to remind everyone that she’s a star.
Blaine Anderson
Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss) used to be the lead singer of the Dalton Academy Warblers but transferred to McKinley High School to be with his boyfriend Kurt. Though he may have shed his Dalton blazer, he sure hasn’t given up his preppy style.
