Alma Madrigal is a character in Disney's Encanto. Referred to as Abuela, she is the matriarch of the Madrigal family and head of the magical village. Her husband, Pedro, sacrificed himself to invaders so she could escape with their three newborn children, Pepa, Bruno, and Julieta. A miracle blessed them and her candle, vanquishing the opposing army and creating La Casa Madrigal. Her care for the community causes her to put too much pressure on her family's gifts, and thus she can be controlling and harsh. When the casita begins to crumble, Mirabel helps her grandmother understand the real miracle lies within the Madrigal family bond.
