Carbon Costume

Dolores (voiced by Adassa) is the quietest member of the miraculous Madrigal family. She can hear anything and everything, even the secrets whispering behind the walls of the casita. Those secrets are hard to keep, though. Especially when they put her family in danger.

Dolores may be soft spoken but her style says volumes. And it makes for a great cosplay. A red hairband with a bow keeps her hair up. Her only accents are a simple red beaded necklace and small gold hoop earrings. A ruffled white top edged in yellow corresponds with her full red skirt, also accented with a yellow band. Full red skirts are easy enough to find, but you will have to glue the yellow ribbon on with fabric flue. After that, finish off the look with matching red flats and you’re ready for your own musical number.

Agustín Madrigal (voiced by Wilmer Valderrama) is the husband of Julieta in the Disney animated film Encanto.  Agustín does not have any magical powers of his own and is very accident-prone, which is how he met his wife.  Agustín wears a blue pinstripe vest and pants with a blue tie.  He wears mismatched socks (one with dumbbells to represent his daughter Luisa and one with embroidery from his daughter Mirabel), as well as a purple flower to represent his daughter Isabela.  Since it would be fairly difficult to find his custom socks, don’t be afraid to find ones that evoke a similar feel and mix and match to your heart’s content.

In the Netflix satirical film Don’t Look Up, Jennifer Lawrence portrays Kate Dibiasky, an astronomy Ph.D. student who discovers a massive comet hurtling toward earth. Kate goes on a campaign with Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) to warn humanity of the impending extinction event. Unfortunately for the astronomer duo and for all life on earth, their warning is not taken seriously. Kate spends the entirety of the film freaking out, but definitely looks cool while doing it. The film’s costume designer went for a punk-scientist look, giving Kate a double nostril piercing and red bob with shaved temples and micro-bangs. Who knows, maybe Timothée Chalamet will show up and let you make out with him.

Pepa Madrigal (voiced by Carolina Gaitán) is a member of the magical Madrigal family in the Disney animated film Encanto.  The aunt of Mirabel, Isabela, and Luisa, Pepa possesses a magical power that allows her to control the weather.  Her husband, Félix, has no magical ability of his own, but his fun-loving attitude helps balance out his wife’s moods so her powers don’t get out of control.  It’s pretty easy to find Pepa’s dress made for a children’s costume, but if you’re looking to create her outfit as an adult, focus on finding dresses with similar colors and silhouettes like yellows and oranges with ruffles.

Played to perfection by Sigourney Weaver, Gwen DeMarco is the perfect “Galaxy Quest” parody to every communications officer in Star Trek. Woefully under-appreciated despite a talent for alien languages, communications officers are usually accused of just “repeating the computer”. And DeMarco is sick of it!

You might not be headed for a starship, but you can still get DeMarco’s look. Start with a blonde wig, a red tank top, and grey boots. Snag a grey flight suit and some red paint for the details of a Galaxy quest suit. Add on a Galaxy Quest patch, grab your communicator, and you’re ready to go.

Holly Hale (played by Carmel Electra) is a character in the parody film Scary Movie 4.  Holly is blind, a parody of Ivy Elizabeth Walker from the M. Night Shyamalan film The Village.  Holly’s Amish-inspired costuming is much more overtly sexy than the real thing, so it might be difficult to find an exact match for her blue prairie dress.  But you can focus on matching the print, silhouette, or neckline if you can’t find one that meets all the requirements at once.  Pairing your dress with a wooden walking stick, short red wig, and a good sense of humor will top off the look.  If you’re more interested in recreating the sexy lingerie costuming Holly reveals in the film, a lace bodysuit can add a little extra coverage than the original.

Luisa Madrigal (voiced by Jessica Darrow) is the middle child of the Madrigal family in the Disney movie Encanto.  Luisa is younger than Isabela, but older than Mirabel.  Endowed with super strength, Luisa is reliable and tough, always willing to lend a helping hand, especially to her younger sister.  Luisa wears a long dark skirt and matching shoes paired with a white blouse.  She accessorizes with cloth bracelets and a red ribbon in her hair.

Isabela Madrigal (voiced by Diane Guerrero) is the eldest sister of Luisa and Mirabel in the Disney animated feature Encanto.  With the power to conjure flowers and plants, Isabela is often considered the golden child of the Madrigal family.  Her costuming consists of a tiered floral dress in shades of purple, long dark hair, and a floral hair clip.  While plenty of recreated dresses exist for children, if you’re looking to create this costume for an adult, you’ll want to focus on soft purples and finding a dress that emulates her flowy silhouette.
