Men

Mark and Patricia McCloskey

Mark and Patricia McCloskey were speakers at the Republican National Convention because they waved guns at Black Lives Matter protesters. The St. Louis couple rose to national notoriety in late June when they were captured in viral videos and photos outside their mansion in a gated community, pointing a rifle and handgun at peaceful protesters. Since then, they have turned into a Rorschach test for where people stand on the Black Lives Matter movement and gun rights in America.

Murray Bauman from Stranger Things

In the second season of Stranger Things, Murray Bauman (played by Brett Gelman) is introduced as a private investigator hired by Barb‘s parents to look into her disappearance.  Murray also plays an important role in Nancy and Jonathan‘s investigation into the Hawkins lab.  Murray is bit nutty and a conspiracy theorist, but he is also shown to be intelligent and dedicated to uncovering the truth.

Roy Batty from Blade Runner

Roy Batty from Blade Runner

Roy Batty (played by Rutger Hauer) is a replicant – an android – built for the sole purpose of fighting in places seen as too dangerous for humans, much like Pris, Zhora, and Rachael. Unfortunately for him, soldier replicants only have a four-year lifespan. It is this injustice that brings him back to Earth and pushes him to try any means necessary to extend his life. He’s one of sci-fi’s most enduring antiheroes and is almost more a fan favorite than the the movie’s hero, Deckard.

Roy’s costume is simple but pulling it off takes a little bit of work. There are two iconic parts to his look: his white blonde hair and the dove her carries. You can either bleach your hair or opt for a wig. And there are many prop doves on Amazon, one of which is listed above.

For the rest of his costume you will need a leather trench coat, grey t-shirt, black tactical pants, and  – as odd as it might sound – a pair of black and white sneakers. If you want to try and get some of the detailing on Roy’s coat you can use leather tubing and a hot glue gun to try and recreate the specific style.

It’s a simple costume with parts that can be repurposed for other cosplays. But it’s still a costume with an impact and a shelf life of a lot more than four years!

Benny Watts from The Queen's Gambit

Benny Watts from The Queen’s Gambit

In the Netflix miniseries The Queen’s Gambit, Benny Watts (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) is a rival chess player to Beth Harmon who goes on to become one of her closest friends and ally. He’s confident, brash, and has a unique style — especially for a chess player in the 1960s — complete with cowboy hat, silver jewelry, and a knife on his belt.

Glen Lantz from Nightmare on Elm Street

Glen Lantz from Nightmare on Elm Street

Glen Lantz (played by an early-career Johnny Depp) is one of the protagonists of the classic 80s slasher fic Nightmare on Elm Street. He is the boyfriend of Nancy, the films main hero and the one who ultimately finds out how to defeat Freddy Kreuger. Although Glen supports his girlfriend and believes her when  nobody else does, he ends up falling prey to Kreuger in one of the film’s most spectacular deaths.

Glen has several looks throughout the movie but the most iconic is the outfit he’s wearing right before he falls into Freddy’s clutches for the last time. A feathered brunette wig (or your own hair and some pomade) will give you his hairstyle. His top is a jersey-style sweatshirt that has been cut to bare his midriff, which you can easily recreate with a white pullover, blue fabric paint, and blue iron on numbers. All you have to do is paint stripes around the shoulders, iron on the number 10 and cut the sweater into a crop top.

Grey sweats, Nike socks, and white 80s-style trainers finish off the look. You can accessorize with a pair of large silver headphones. And, if you want to go for a post-Freddy Glen, you can add in some fake blood as well.

hubie dubois from hubie halloween

Hubie Dubois from Hubie Halloween

In the Netflix film Hubie Halloween, Hubie Dubois (played by Adam Sandler) is a deli worker in Salem, Massachusetts.  Hubie is the laughing stock of his town, and the butt of many jokes, but this does not deter him from dedicating himself to being the town’s official Halloween Helper, which is obvious when he wears his blue “MONITOR” sash.  To create Hubie’s sash, you can take matte navy blue ribbon and write on it with white fabric paint or a marker.

Country Steve from Borat 2

Country Steve from Borat 2

In Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Borat goes undercover as Country Steve, attempting to fit in at a pro-gun rally and find his daughter Tutar. Amidst confederate flags and assault rifles, Country Steve performs on stage. He sings about injecting Obama with the Wuhan flu and chopping up the WHO like the Saudis do, and it doesn’t take much for the crowd to start singing along.

jonathan byers from stranger things

Jonathan Byers from Stranger Things

Jonathan Byers (played by Charlie Heaton) is the older brother of Will and son of Joyce.  In the first season, Jonathan is bullied and teased by Steve and his friends, though they later become tentative friends, even as Jonathan enters into a relationship with Steve’s ex-girlfriend Nancy.

ryuk from death note

Ryuk from Death Note

Ryuk is the shinigami who gives Light the notebook that allows him to kill people by simply writing their names in Death Note.  Ryuk is an intimidating figure.  As a god of death, it makes sense that his aesthetic relies heavily on dark colors and skull imagery.  If you have any chains or accessories leftover from your punk phase, this is a great time to reuse them.  If you want to go the extra mile, there are also plenty of makeup tutorials for recreating Ryuk’s terrifying face or you could purchase a latex Ryuk mask if the more subtle face covering options aren’t to your liking.

David Rose from Schitt's Creek

David Rose from Schitt’s Creek

In Schitt’s Creek, David Rose (Dan Levy) is the spoiled son of the Rose family. As the series goes on however, he grows as an adult and flourishes with his small business, Rose Apothecary. David is one of the first openly pansexual characters depicted on television. Aside from the Levy-brows, his most distinguishing characteristic is his fashion style. David wears only black and white, usually a black knit sweater with bold pattern on top, and a combination of skinny jeans and kilt on the bottom. All from the most expensive runway brands of course.
