Anne Lister from Gentleman Jack

Anne Lister was a very real person whose life caught the eye of Sally Wainwright. A lifelong learner now known as one of history’s more openly queer figures, Lister is an LGBTQIA icon whose life has been dramatized for the show Gentleman Jack where she is played to perfection by Suranne Jones.

Lister’s style is very severe. She wears her hair curled up in small buns and often wears a top hat. A white shirt with a strong ruffle wears well under a short, fitted jacket and fitted skirt. Black button boots and a black cane round out the look of a woman who brooks no nonsense and knows her own mind well enough to follow it regardless of what others may say.

Arthur Pendragon from Merlin

Whenever I think of Arthur, I can just imagine him calling for “Meeeerlin!” in a peeved, pompous voice. Bradley James brought a youthful incarnation of the once and future king of Camelot to life on British television screens (and various streaming services around the world), making him all the more relatable to young viewers. Arthur starts off as an arrogant, self-absorbed “prat,” according to his totally-not-magical manservant Merlin, but over the course of the series, he develops into a majestic ruler and responsible leader.

Malcolm Tucker from In The Loop

Malcolm Tucker (Peter Capaldi) is the foul-mouthed and hilarious protagonist of the British series The Thick of It and the 2009 film In the Loop. His clothing style is the basic business look: suit and tie, button up dress shirt, black shoes, black belt. The rest of the character is about getting overly creative with your insults.

Detectorists

In Detectorists, Andy Stone (MacKenzie Crook) and Lance Stater (Toby Jones) are passionate members of the Danebury Metal Detecting Club. They’re metal detectorists, not to be confused with the metal detectors they hold in their hands when searching for Saxon treasure.

John Luther

Detective Chief Inspector John Luther (Idris Elba) works for the Serious and Serial Crime Unit on the BBC show Luther. He’s a brilliant, gritty detective who often toes the line between following the law and breaking it. Either way, tweed’s never looked better than it does on him.
