Elizabeth “Lizzie” Bennet
Elizabeth “Lizzie” Bennet is the protagonist of Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice. She is unconventional because she refuses to submit to expectations of British high society. Whereas her mother urges her to marry, Elizabeth feels perfectly capable on her own, and much rather prefers the company of her eldest sister, Jane. Although she is playful and good natured, her judgmental attitude gets the best of her, as seen by a strong dislike of Mr. Darcy. In the end, Elizabeth learns not to hold initial prejudices because people’s real character can surprise her. This realization leads to an reconsideration of Darcy’s proposal, and the two get happily married. In the 2005 film adaptation, famous actress Keira Knightley plays Elizabeth.
Harriet Smith from Emma
Harriet Smith (played by Mia Goth) is an orphan and pupil at Mrs. Goddard’s boarding school in Highbury. She becomes Emma Woodhouse’s closest friend in both the book and film versions of Jane Austen’s Emma. Harriet is a naive young girl who is easily swayed by Emma and her preferences. Harriet can often be found wearing a red cape, which is part of her boarding school uniform.
Mr. George Knightley from Emma
Mr. Knightley (played by Johnny Flynn in the newest film adaptation) is Emma Woodhouse’s closest confidant in Jane Austen’s Emma. George is kind and intelligent, with the wit necessary to match Emma, but much more maturity at his disposal. Mr. Knightley’s dress is typical of the regency era in which Jane Austen’s novels are mostly set.
Emma Woodhouse from Emma
Emma Woodhouse (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) may be handsome, clever, and rich, but she can also be a bit naive and spoiled in the latest adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel. Throughout the film, Emma wears an array of colorful and intricate period costumes, providing ample opportunity to explore the regency era and create an outfit with colors and textures that speak to you.
