Petey Piranha from Super Mario

Petey Piranha (voiced by Toru Minegishi in his original appearance) is a boss from the Super Mario Bros. video game franchise.  Originally appearing in Super Mario Sunshine, Petey is a carnivorous plant who is set apart from the other piranha plants in the games by his sheer size and additional abilities.  He is a frequent nemesis of Mario and Luigi.  To recreate this funky plant costume, you’ll want to start with a green full-coverage bodysuit.  Then, don a pair of a pair of polka-dot briefs and a piranha plant mask.  For an extra touch, consider adding a floral headband to your costume to finish the look.

Bowser Jr. from Super Mario

In the Super Mario Bros. series, Bowser Jr. is the only child of Bowser and an unknown mother. He’s not to be confused with the infant form of his father – Baby Bowser – or the Koopa Troopas. For most of the franchise he struggles to live up to his father’s expectations but every now and then a different side shows through. It’s what makes him such an interesting character.

For his cosplay you will want a yellow body suit and yellow Bowser feet, though you’ll want to seal the feet with a waterproof spray before wearing them to a convention. Black cuffs adorn either wrist which are easy to get in a variety of sizes.

His bib will take a bit of DIY however, especially in order to get one big enough for an adult. The easiest way is to get a large square of white fabric like the table cloth listed above, then fold and trim it down to the right size. From there you just need some fabric markers to copy over the snarling mouth on Bowser Jr.’s bib and your version is good to go!

His shell is easy to replicate with a shell backpack (always handy at a convention) and spikes you can add yourself. His hair is another spot where you will have to do some DIY. You can go for a bald cap and then make a top ponytail or you can put your own twist on it with something like the orange wig pictured above!

Peach and Daisy from Mario Sports Mix

While Princess Peach is instantly recognizable as Mushroom Kingdom’s damsel in distress in many of the Mario franchise’s games, her counterpart Princess Daisy is also a frequently appearing character in Mario spinoffs. In most titles, Daisy wears a variation of Peach’s dress with slightly different details and in a sunny orange and yellow color scheme. In the various Mario sports games, Peach and Daisy keep their respective palettes, but in athletic wear.

Koopa Troopa

The lowly Koopa Troopa is a minion of Bowser in the Mario franchise. They’re most often seen with green or red shells, and are one of the most common enemies that a player might find in-game. They’re easily disposed of by simply jumping up and bopping them on the head.

Shy Guy

Shy Guys are masked enemies in Super Mario Bros. that cause trouble just by being in the way. They like to change up their appearance by wearing different colored robes.

Princess Peach

Always the damsel-in-distress, Princess Peach has a pretty standard style as far as royalty is concerned. Extremely feminine and sweet, her look is also easy to recreate. All you need is a pink prom dress and long white gloves. Top the look off with a tiara and you are sure to attract your own Italian plumber in no time.

Wario

Wario is an exaggerated and more malicious appearing version of Mario. Even his name is derived from a combination of Mario’s name and the Japanese word for bad, warui. His outfit is also very similar to Mario’s but just in a different color combination.

Mario

It’s a me, Mario! Mario is a plump, Italian plumber who’s quest is to save Princess Peach from Bowser. Along the way he’s collected several powers such as throwing fire and ice balls, flying, and becoming invincible. He’s also collected a number of fashionable outfits including a frog suit, a tanooki suit, and a penguin suit.
