Akane Hino from Smile PreCure!
Akane Hino (voiced by Asami Tano and Colleen Ann Villard) is one of the main characters of the anime series Smile PreCure! Akane’s alter ego is Cure Sunny, who controls the power of flames and fire. Akane has red hair and eyes, and is typically seen in an orange sweater with yellow intersecting lines and red pockets, jeans, and red flats. If you are feeling crafty, you could always take some fabric paint to an orange tunic to make it more closely resemble her actual outfit. As Cure Sunny, Akane’s hair becomes orange and much longer and she sports an orange and yellow outfit. Finding a cosplay outfit for Akane’s alter ego can be difficult, especially at an affordable price, but if you are willing to take some time to mix and match other pieces and layer them together, you can achieve a similar look. Layer an orange corset or bustier over a ruffled tank top to recreate the epaulets of Sunny’s uniform, and use costume spats to make your heels and thigh high stockings look more like her costume boots. Tie a yellow ballet skirt, but leave it open, over an orange mini to evoke the multi-layered outfit she wears in the series.
Howard Stambler from 10 Cloverfield Lane
In 10 Cloverfield Lane, Howard Stambler (played by John Goodman) is a paranoid ex-Navy officer who is living with Michelle and Emmett in an underground bunker. He is estranged from his ex-wife Denise and beloved daughter Megan, whom he still attempts to contact against Denise’s wishes. During the events of the film, Howard’s motivations for bringing Michelle down to the bunker come into question. Howard is extremely paranoid and could be described as a stereotypical doomsday prepper in many ways. His clothing is utilitarian, typically consisting of a white t-shirt and a flannel worn over top and left unbuttoned.
Omar from Craig of the Creek
Omar (voiced by Zeno Robinson) is a character on the Cartoon Network animated series Craig of the Creek. Once known as the Green Poncho, Omar protected the Overpass. Eventually, he joined the Stump Kids. Omar is friends with Craig Williams. Omar’s Green Poncho costume consists of a large bow, sandals, and a green hooded jacket.
Lincoln Loud from The Loud House
Lincoln Loud (currently voiced by Asher Bishop) is the main character of the Nickelodeon cartoon series The Loud House. As the middle child (and only boy) in the Loud family, Lincoln has ten sisters and is a fan of manga, comics, and video games. Lincoln has white hair and sports an overbite with a chipped tooth, which you can recreate with a little patience and some costume tooth wax. His clothing consists of jeans, an orange shirt, and white sneakers with red stripes.
Darby from My Friends Tigger and Pooh
Darby (voiced by Chloe Grace Moretz) is the protagonist of the Disney Channel cartoon series My Friends Tigger and Pooh. She is friendly and outgoing, the leader of the Super Sleuths, and the best friend of Christopher Robin. Darby has short red hair she wears held back by a light purple headband, as well as a matching purple sweater, cargo pants, and comfortable sneakers.
Namaari from Raya and the Last Dragon
Namaari (voiced by Gemma Chan) is the primary antagonist of the Disney animated feature film Raya and the Last Dragon. She is the princess of Fang, one of the five lands of Kumandra, just as Raya is a princess of Heart. Namaari is fiercely protective of her people and will do whatever it takes to help them prosper. She wears her hair short and shorn on one side where she wears a long gold tassel earring. If you aren’t quite ready for an undercut, a deep side part and some gel to slick back the hair on the left side of your head can help you achieve a similar look. She also wears gold arm bands and a gold belt over a red sash, harem pants, and a beige tank top.
Mr. Saito from Inception
Mr Saito (played by Ken Watanabe) is the head of Proclus Global in the film Inception. A rich and powerful man, Saito is originally targeted by Cobb and Arthur. However, once Saito realizes he is in a dream, he seeks to recruit them for a job of his own. In the opening dream sequence, Saito wears a tuxedo that combines traditional Japanese garments with more Western silhouettes. A similar look can be achieved by using the top portion of a nagajuban or a hanjuban undergarment. Either way, it is best to choose one with pleats or grey details to best exemplify Saito’s costuming.
Ali Mills from The Karate Kid
Ali Mills (played by Elisabeth Shue) is a main character in the 1984 movie The Karate Kid. Ali befriends Daniel LaRusso as he trains for the All-Valley Karate Championships under Mr. Miyagi. A popular and stylish girl, Ali wears a number of 80s-inspired outfits throughout the film. If you can’t find the exact pieces to match her costuming, be sure to focus on the colors and silhouettes; she often wears bold colors but in more pastel shades than many might associate with the decade’s fashions.
Milkman Karlson
In the eponymous video game created by YouTuber Dani, Milkman Karlson must make his way to the store to buy milk. However, this is no ordinary milk run, with enemies appearing in his path to slow him down. Milkman Karlson must use his weapons to dispatch of these enemies and he can earn money by not only killing his enemies, but by doing “epic” tricks and flips. To dress as Milkman Karlson, you’ll need a black shirt, yellow pants, and blue overshirt. For a little extra pizzazz, you can also opt for a pair of googly eye glasses and bright green socks to pull it all together.
Rex from Airheads
Rex (played by Steve Buscemi) is the bassist for the Lone Rangers in the movie Airheads. Rex along with his friends and bandmates Chazz and Pip holds a radio station hostage in a bid to have the band’s demo tape heard by producers. Rex has many bad tattoos on his arms and wears black jeans with combat boots and a distressed “Road Kill Café” t-shirt. If roadkill isn’t your thing, you could use any dark distressed t-shirt in your arsenal to evoke a similar effect. If you choose to wear a fake goatee as part of your costume, make sure to get a good skin-safe adhesive like spirit gum as well as remover to ensure it looks great, but also doesn’t hurt coming off.
