Cartoons
Cherry from Words Bubbling Up Like Cider
Cherry is bad at communicating with others. He usually keeps his headphones on, and channels his energy into writing haikus. He meets Smile by literally bumping into her at a mall causing the incident that starts their friendship. Cherry connects with Smile the way he can’t with others in Words Bubbling Up Like Cider (Cider no You ni Kotoba ga Wakiagaru).
Carmilla from Castlevania
Carmilla (played by Jaime Murray in the Castlevania animated series) is the Vampiress Queen of Styria. She was a former general of lord Dracula’s army but by all accounts has become a traitor. She tricked the devil forgemaster Hector into joining her and then held him as her prisoner. She now plots to usurp control over the other vampires and create an army that will force humankind into fear and submission. Carmilla notably has a color scheme of red and gold with long white hair. I recommend using the white mascara in both your eyelashes and eyebrows to complete the vampiric look.
Katara from Avatar: The Last Airbender
Katara is a teenage girl from the Water Tribe with waterbending abilities. One fateful day, on an outing with her older brother Sokka, she encounters a young boy seemingly trapped inside an iceberg hundreds of times his size. That boy is the Avatar, a master bender of the four elements. Katara and Sokka become his friends and allies, protecting him (and sometimes keeping his natural childishness in check) on a harrowing, three-season adventure. Katara dresses warmly to suit the icy climate she grew up in – to imitate the heavy fur robe she wears, you can add fur trim to the collar and hem of the wrap dress we’ve listed above. To achieve Katara’s hairstyle, check out this tutorial from Sil Vous Plaits.
Musa from Winx Club
Musa (voiced by Romi Dames in the English versions and Gemma Donati in the Italian versions) is the Fairy of Music and one of the six core members of the Winx Club. She is also the princess of her home planet Melody. Her boyfriend Riven is a combat student at the Red Fountain school alongside the boyfriends and fiances of several other Winx Club members.
Musa is unique in a few ways. She is one of two fairies to embrace technology as part of her magic. She also has short hair a solid red dress instead of the long hair and two-piece outfits that most of the Winx Club wears. Her color is red, so a red dress and red boots make up her costume. Purple headphones and a purple and around her upper arm – which can be recreated with a ribbon – are her contrasting accessories. Her wings are also blue instead of white and more sleek that most of the other fairies’.
Space Ghost from Space Ghost Coast to Coast
Space Ghost premiered in 1966 as a superhero fighting villains in outer space. The late night talk show spin-off Space Ghost Coast to Coast launched in the mid-90s and focused on Space Ghost’s interviews with other “superheroes.” While Space Ghost may have been a good crime fighter, his hosting abilities left a little to be desired, leading to awkward and often hilarious interviews. To make your Space Ghost costume, you might want to flex some of your creativity by painting his logo onto your white suit. And don’t forget your index cards, so you can ask insightful questions of your interview subjects.
Aisha from Winx Club
Aisha (voiced by Keke Palmer in the English versions and Laura Lenghi in the Italian versions) is one of the six core members of the Winx club. She is also the Fairy of Waves and the princess of her home planet Andros. Aisha is loyal, clever, and a fantastic friend the rest of the Winx club.
To cosplay as Aisha you will want to lean into the color green. Her most common form as a fairy is white wings, a green halter top, green skirt, and green boots. She has long brown hair that she wears down. Like the rest of the Winx club she has countless outfits which is unusual for most animated shows. But this outfit is one of her most iconic fairy look.
For her more human look you can go with the same wig then change the glittering green of her fairy form for a pink spaghetti strap top, green denim skirt, white leg warmers, and green boots.
D.W. Read from Arthur
Dora Winifred, better known by the abbreviation “D.W.” is Arthur‘s younger sister on the PBS show Arthur, based on the books by Marc Brown. D.W. is in preschool, and enjoys watching Mary Moo Cow and listening to Crazy Bus, which irritates her older brother. D.W.’s typical outfit consists of a pink sleeveless dress over a long sleeved white shirt.
Ami Onuki from Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi
In the anime Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi, Ami Onuki (voiced by Janice Kawaye) is the brighter and more optimistic half of pop duo Puffy AmiYumi, along with Yumi Yoshimura. A lover of all things girly including rainbows, bunnies, and sparkles, Ami is also a talented drummer. To get the details right, you could use pink iron on patches to create the colorblock effect of Ami’s yellow dress, and don’t forget to style your wig with her signature space buns.
Canada from Hetalia
Matthew Williams, also known as Canada, is a side character in Hetalia: Axis Powers. While he sometimes gets mistaken for his brother, America, he acts nothing like him. Whereas America is bold and outspoken, Canada is shy and passive. Other countries tend to forget he exists, which makes him nostalgic for when England and France used to pamper him. Even pet polar bear, Kumajirou, asks “who are you?” to which he sheepishly responds, “I’m Canada.”
Protagonist from The Tatami Galaxy
Protagonist is not given any other name. He is trying to make the best out of college life in Kyoto. Two years already passed, and he is wondering what happened to the “rose colored” campus life he imagined. Mystically, Protagonist gets thrown back in time to the beginning of his college years in a chance to do things over. Protagonist tries to make his college life what he always wanted in The Tatami Galaxy (Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei).
