Women
Maggie Pesky from The Buzz on Maggie
Maggie Pesky (voiced by Jessica DiCicco) is the 13-year-old fly protagonist of the Disney show The Buzz on Maggie. Maggie dreams of being a rockstar and has psychic visions of the future. Maggie’s costume includes chunky boots, a yellow skirt, and bright pink hair and socks. She also often rocks a double-necked guitar, but purchasing one would be an expensive proposition for a costume. Instead, you could use two inflatable guitars and to create a double-necked prop by cutting off the neck of one and taping it closed after it’s inflated. If you’d like to take your costume to the next level, you could also follow a DIY tutorial like this one to create additional arms, as Maggie has four.
Eve from Lucifer
Eve (Inbar Lavi) is a character in the fourth season of Lucifer. She’s the first human woman in creation. She’s an energetic party girl with a tendency to act on a reckless impulse. While intended to be Adam’s wife, Eve had a secret relationship with Lucifer Morningstar. Unhappy with her husband in heaven, she finds a way to Earth and reunite with Lucifer. This throws Chloe Decker and Lucifer’s budding romance into a loop as Eve becomes his girlfriend again. But Lucifer breaks it off when he realizes she wants the old devil, admitting he has changed. Thinking returning to Hell would make him more like his old self, she brings demons to Earth, accidentally fulfilling a prophecy. However she redeems herself by helping prevent the archangel Amenadiel’s infant son from being taken by the demons. Eve realizes she is out of touch with people’s feelings and chooses to explore Earth to find herself.
Yule Ball Hermione Granger from Harry Potter and Goblet of Fire
Hermione Granger (played by Emma Watson) is the brains of Hogwarts’ most notorious trio. At least the most notorious while she was in school there. Usually Hermione wasn’t one to stand out from the crowd except with her intellect. But when the Yule Ball rolled around the stole the show in her lilac dress, slick curls, and the school’s visiting heart throb as her date.
You might be hard-pressed to find your own Viktor Krum but you can certainly copy Hermione’s look. You’ll want to start with a long curly wig since one of the first things noticed about Hermione at the ball was her hair. You can achieve the same updo with hair pins and this YouTube Video. There are also video tutorials on how to copy her exact makeup look as well.
Once you have your wig set, add in a violet ballgown and some plum ribbon as a sash. Finding her exact dress is a little difficult (though there are patterns online if you are handy with a sewing machine) but there is one listed above. A few similar dresses are also included that may be a little more affordable. Once you have chosen your gown just add in some enamel flower earrings, silver heels, and Hermione’s wand. We might not have seen it at the ball but it’s not likely that she didn’t have it close at hand!
Bismuth
Bismuth is a character in Steven Universe. She is a former and current member of the Crystal Gems. During the Rebellion, she worked as a blacksmith, but then she got into a conflict of interest with Rose Quartz. Bismuth got bubbled and remained in the Pink Dimension until being freed by Steven. She proposed the same idea that she had to Rose: the Breaking Point, a weapon that could shatter any gems, even Diamonds. Like his mother, Steven rejected this idea and after an intense battle, he bubbled Bismuth again. He brings her back in the final fight against Homeworld, where she rejoins the Crystal Gems. Uzo Aduba, who you might recognize from Orange is the New Black, voices Bismuth. This costume requires some sewing. Sew the pink star onto the apron and the black star onto the right arm of the bodysuit.
Mayaka from Hyouka
Mayaka Ibara is a member of the Classic Literature Club, and attends Kamiyama High School. She also volunteers as an assistant in the library, and is part of the Manga Club. Mayaka can be nit-picky and stubborn, but is nice overall. Mayaka joins the adventures of the Classic Literature Club in Hyouka.
Goldilocks from Purple Mattress
In the Purple Mattress commercials, Goldilocks (Mallory Everton) is a bed expert who mischievously uses raw eggs to test the quality of mattresses. A hard mattress will crack the eggs, a soft mattress will also crack the eggs, but a mattress that’s just right will cradle the eggs, even with 1,000 pounds of weights on top of them.
Anne Shirley Cuthbert from Anne with an E
Anne Shirley is the protagonist of the Canadian TV series, Anne with an E. The show is an adaptation of Anne of Green Gables, the literary classic by Lucy Maud Montgomery. Played by Amybeth McNulty, Anne Shirley Cuthbert is a thirteen year old girl growing up in the late 1800s. Despite a difficult childhood, Anne is remarkably resilient. She has a determined spirit, fierce intellect, and a wonderful imagination. She enjoys reading, storytelling, and journalism.
Miss Trunchbull from Matilda
If you were a ’90s kid, Miss Trunchbull from Matilda was the stuff of nightmares. Played by Pam Ferris, she was the epitome of a horrible principal. Whether it was locking kids in the Chokey or tossing them out a window to land (safely, thankfully) in a rare patch of flowers near her school, she terrorized students and staff alike.
I wouldn’t recommend emulating her attitude but you can certainly get her severe style with a few key pieces. The most important pieces are a long green overcoat and a wig with a slicked-back bun. The overcoat pictured above is longer than Miss Trunchbull’s but this will allow you hem it (or tape it up) to the right length for you. If you want to cosplay her her school uniform you can wear a skirt and shirt under the overcoat, though they won’t e seen. Of course you’ll need the wig with its slicked back bun as well. Add in some tall Army green socks and leather shoes as well as a leather belt to complete the look.
For the clothes she wears at home you’ll need a grey pullover sweater, green sweat pants, white athletic socks, and sneakers. Using letter Transfer sheets add the words “1972 Olympics” to the front of the sweater. Tuck a white towel in around the back of your neck with the bulk of it showing above the collar. Take the leather belt from her school outfit (or a weight lifting leather belt if you have one) and tighten it around your waste. Then add in green sweats, bunched athletic socks, and simple sneakers.
And, of course, Miss Trunchbull isn’t Miss Trunchbull without her coveted box of chocolates. You can make your own by taking the chocolates (still in their paper cups) out of a standard box of chocolates and putting them into an enamel hinge-top box. It’s a bit bulky for an accessory but every Matilda fan will know immediately why Miss Trunchbull would keep the box close!
Lisa Rowe from Girl, Interrupted
In Girl, Interrupted (based on Susanna Kaysen’s memoir), Lisa Rowe (Angelina Jolie) is a sociopathic patient at the psychiatric hospital where Susanna (Winona Ryder) has checked in. Lisa proves to be charismatic, manipulative, and ultimately, dangerous, although she is well-liked by the other patients and bonds with Susanna.
Lydia Martin
Lydia Martin (Holland Roden) is a main character in MTV’s Teen Wolf. She starts out as a preppy popular girl, who quickly recruits Allison Argent as her new best friend. Later on, she plays a crucial role to resurrecting Derek Hale‘s uncle, Peter. This all gets explained in the third season, as Lydia is revealed to be a banshee. It is also revealed that she is much smarter than she lets on. For instance, she nonchalantly mentions her knowledge of archaic Latin. The rest of the show follows her adjustment to her supernatural powers as well as her romantic relationship with Stiles Stilinski.
