Women
Astrid Hofferson from How to Train Your Dragon
In How to Train Your Dragon, Astrid Hofferson (America Ferrera) is a young Viking woman from the Hooligan Tribe, and the eventual girlfriend of Hiccup. She’s blunt in her speech but loyal to her friends, and excelled in the training of/with her dragon. Brown fur and armor, inspired by her Viking heritage, are fixtures in her outfit.
Queen Anna from Frozen 2
In Frozen 2, Princess Anna of Arendelle becomes Queen Anna of Arendelle. When Elsa realizes she is the fifth spirit, and it’s best for her to stay in the Enchanted Forest, she steps down from being queen. As a result, her younger sister becomes queen. This is Anna’s coronation outfit, which resembles Elsa’s from the first movie. Be sure to show off that engagement ring from Kristoff!
X-23 from the X-Men Comics
X-23 is a genetic clone of the famous Canadian X-Man Wolverine, successfully created in a lab by scientist Dr. Sarah Kinney after twenty-two failed attempts. Her first-ever appearance in X-Men lore was the X-Men: Evolution TV series, but was welcomed into the comic book universe with the NYX comics, which explained her origin story in a grittier fashion than the children’s cartoon before it. X-23 then entered the Marvel-Fox cinematic universe in the form of a young Mexican child in James Mangold’s Logan, but her teenage/young adult persona from the comics can be just as fun to cosplay.
Molly Finnister from Penny Dreadful: City of Angels
Molly Finister (played by Kerry Bishe) was a revivalist singer on the show Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. Although she ultimately chose death rather than continue the life her mother had trapped her in, Molly was best known for her stunning voice.
Singing like Molly isn’t easy, but her look is fairly straightforward. You’ll need a coiffed blonde wig in a ’30s style and a dress similar to those worn at that time. A handbag, nylons, and heels finish her look. Because of her religious studies, Molly carries heavy leatherbound books. And as a bonus, the book is an accessory you can use in many, many different costumes!
Agent O from Men in Black
Agent O (Emma Thompson) is a stern, experienced agent who worked her way up from being Chief X’s secretary to heading the New York branch of the MiB following the death of Chief Zed. She appears in the third Men in Black film and the recent reboot, Men in Black: International. Agent O’s severe fashion sense has undergone some tweaks over the years — instead of the standard blazer and buttoned-up blouse she wore in the third film, she currently opts for a mock neck and jewel-necked suit jacket over a black pencil skirt. This guide shows you how to recreate her clothing from both films.
Galadriel
Galadriel is a character in The Lord of the Rings. Possessing exceptional beauty and wisdom, she is one of the greatest elves of Middle Earth. She is also extremely powerful. In fact, her magical abilities are akin to that of Gandalf. This is in part to her possession of one of the Great Rings, Nenya, or the Ring of Adamant. She is admired by everyone, especially Gimli, who is in awe of her magnificent presence. Her mirror allows seekers to see possible events of the future. Galadriel gives each member of the Fellowship an Elven cloak as well as a gift. She gifts Frodo with a phial that shines bright in the dark. You can use a crystal rose quartz as her phial. In the film adaptation, Cate Blanchett plays this role.
Leilani from The Lovebirds
In the Netflix romantic comedy The Lovebirds, Leilani (played by Issa Rae) is the girlfriend of Jibran. The couple decides to end their relationship early in the film, but they then become embroiled in a complicated conspiracy involving a sex cult and cold-blooded murder. You have a few choices when it comes to emulating Leilani’s costuming, from the stylish dress and leather jacket she begins with, to the outlandish unicorn outfit she wears, and the formal dress and masquerade mask she dons while infiltrating a secret society. It is difficult to find a unicorn hoodie made for adults that matches the look of Leilani’s from the film, but with a little hot glue or a sewing kit, you could easily attach a unicorn headband to the hood of a galaxy print hoodie. Otherwise, a unicorn Halloween costume might also do the trick.
Nile from The Old Guard
Nile Freeman (played by KiKi Layne) is a former United States Marine who fought in Afghanistan. In the Netflix movie The Old Guard, Nile is the newest addition to an immortal band of soldiers led by Andy. Along with Booker, Joe, and Nicky, Nile learns to understand her new purpose as an immortal soldier. Recreations of Nile’s iconic jacket can be found online through a variety of websites, though the price and quality may range. You can achieve a similar look with a simple green letterman jacket and some blue fabric paint.
Midna from Zelda
Midna (voiced by Akiko Koumoto) is the former leader of the Twili people. She made her debut on The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for the Nintendo Gamecube and Wii. Though her people are known for wielding great magic she has been stripped of hers and – for most of the franchise – is trapped in her imp form. Both her imp form and her true form make for excellent cosplay costumes!
For her imp form you will want to find a custom cosplay headpiece from Etsy. Worn over a yellow spiked wig it gives you the most iconic part of her appearance. From there face paint and a light blue body suit modified with black fabric paint gives you the rest of her look.
If you want to cosplay her true form you will need a ginger wig that you style in the unique manner Midna prefers to wear it. A black bikini top , black wrap skirt, and black cloak finish off her clothing. You can use body paint to achieve the blue-skinned look of her concept art or you can choose to stick with your natural skin tone if body paint is not appealing!
Andy from The Old Guard
Andromache of Scythia, better known as Andy (played by Charlize Theron), is the leader of an immortal mercenary force in Netflix’s The Old Guard. At 6,000 years old, Andy has seen her fair share of conflict. Andy is protective of her comrades Booker, Joe, Nicky, and their newest member Nile. Andy’s look consists of dark colors and practical pieces designed to protect her in combat, as well a short-cropped haircut.
