Crimson Bolt from Super

In the movie Super, Rainn Wilson plays the role of Frank Darbo, a kind but awkward man who creates the vigilante alter-ego Crimson Bolt in the aftermath of his wife’s death.  The Crimson Bolt dons a homemade red suit with a hand-printed sigil.  If you are feeling particularly crafty, you could make your Crimson Bolt shirt by hand as well with a red long sleeve tee and some yellow fabric paint.  Otherwise, grab your ready-made shirt and layer as much padding as you can over your uniform, using red spray paint liberally when necessary to achieve the fully-crimson appearance of Frank’s superhero personality.

Zenith from 2000 AD

Robert McDowell is a sarcastic superhero that goes by the name Zenith. He appeared regularly in the sci-fi comic 2000 AD. He first appeared in 1987 and began to fade from the scene in 1992. But he still has plenty of fans and his creator – Grant Morrison – has become a popular writer for both DC and Marvel!

Given his active years, Zenith’s look is very distinctly late-80s and early-90s. He wears yellow pants and black mid-calf boots. The exact style varies from year to year but the colors remain the same. He also wears a black t-shirt with a yellow lightning bolt Z painted on it. His jacket – the final piece of his costume – varies from issue to issue. Sometimes it is a blue jacket with padded shoulders and black stripes. Other times it’s a blue and white Letterman’s jacket. And occasionally he wears a black bike cop jacket from the ’50s with studs in the shoulders. With all this change, though, two things stay the same: His styled black hair and the black mask around his eyes.

Stripesy

Stripsey, aka Pat Dugan, is a character from the DC Comics. He first appeared in Star Spangled Comics #1 (1941). He was the sidekick to the Star Spangled Kid before becoming a Golden Age superhero himself. Later on he married Barbara Whitmore, and his step-daughter Courtney became the second Star Spangled Kid, aka Stargirl. Pat returned to assisting the hero as a new sidekick, now known as S.T.R.I.P.E. In contrast to his original look, Pat wears a suit of mechanical robot armor. He has been a member of the All-Star Squadron, Infinity Inc, the Justice Society, and the Seven Soldiers of Victory. In the CW series, Pat is played by Luke Wilson.

Vision's Halloween Costume from WandaVision

Vision’s Halloween Costume from WandaVision

Vision (played by Paul Bettany) died in the Battle of Wakanda. But that doesn’t stop him from being a loving father and husband to Wanda in WandaVision. Most of the time, that is. When he starts to notice the strange truth of his world he seeks answers. And it takes him well beyond his limits, even as an Avenger.

Before Vision finds true terror on Halloween, he dresses up with his family. His costume is a callback to Vision’s original look in the comics though with a few tweaks to make it sitcom-Halloween friendly.

Copying the luck is much easier than copying his look as an Avenger. A green hooded bodysuit does most of the work and red face paint finishes it. Cosmetic glue adds the green “mind stone” on the brow and yellow felt creates the yellow diamond on the chest of the bodysuit. After that all you need is a yellow cloak and yellow running  shorts, yellow socks and white shoes!

wesley dodds from dc comics

Wesley Dodds (Sandman)

Wesley Dodds is the real name of DC superhero Sandman.  Originally introduced in 1939, Dodds uses a gun that administers a powerful sleeping gas to subdue criminals.  He then sprinkles them with sand and leaves them for the police.  In his original (and most iconic) iteration, Dodds wore a green business suit, brown fedora, and purple cape.  Sandman’s look has been updated on several occasions, including a version with a more menacing-looking gas mask and a yellow suit from the mid-eighties until the early 2010s.  No matter which version of Dodds you choose to recreate, you’ll need a brown fedora and a futuristic-looking gun with a wide, round barrel to help you put crime to sleep.

Hourman from DC Comics

Hourman

Created by Bernard Bally and Ken Fitch, Hourman first appeared in 1940. He quickly became a beloved character in what would be known as the Golden Age of comics. Originally the mantle was worn by Rex Tyler who gained his powers for one hour at a time through the use of Miraclo.

Rick Tyler – the bearer of the Hourman name since 2011 – has a different look than the one pictured above. But who doesn’t love a good Golden Age costume?!

To start you’ll need a yellow hooded cape. Hourman’s includes a mask that covers his face but that’s a bit hard to find. You can closely recreate the look with a black face mask that blends with the shadows inside the hood of your cape. You’ll also want an hourglass pendant that you either glue to your cape or fashion into a necklace of some kind.

Under that you’ll want yellow compression pants over which you wear a black long-sleeves singlet. Wrap a red belt around your waist like the one pictured above (though you’ll have to trim the pictured belt quite a bit once you have it sized properly). Finish off the look with some red boots painted with black stripes and you’re ready to go!

homelander-theboys-character

Homelander from The Boys

Homelander is a character in the Amazon TV series, The Boys, played by Antony Starr. He is the leader of The Seven, a team of superheroes who actually do more harm than good. His powers include flight, super strength, super hearing, plus x-ray and laser vision. Despite his symbolic similarities to Superman and Captain America, he is the antagonist. While the public thinks of him as a benevolent hero, he is actually vain, twisted, and power-obsessed. He is probably the most evil and sociopathic of The Seven. Billy Butcher knows his true character, and seeks revenge on him for the death of his wife.

Green Hornet

The Green Hornet (1960s)

Wealthy playboy by day and masked vigilante by night, the Green Hornet’s story is not unlike most popular superheroes. It is his unique fighting style, heavily inspired by Asian martial arts, that sets him apart. The Green Hornet has entertained families since the 1930s, appearing on radio shows, a black-and-white TV show (starring Van Williams) in the 1960s, and even a movie (featuring Seth Rogen) in 2011.

Black Noir from The Boys

Black Noir from The Boys

Black Noir (played by Nathan Mitchell) is the most mysterious of The Seven. He’s one of the deadliest martial artists on the planet but that’s almost the only thing known about him other than his enhanced strength and senses.

If you cosplay Black Noir, you have two options. The first is to get custom pieces but that can get pricey. The second is to use existing pieces that get you the same look though it won’t be exact. In this case, a padded motorcycle jacket and motorcycle pants give you Black Noir’s protected look. A tactical helmet and black knit balaclava will keep your face covered though you will have to work out some sort of tinting for the lenses. Finally black combat boots and tactical gloves fully conceal your identity and turn you into Black Noir
