Aragorn

Aragorn is a major character in The Lord of the Rings. Known by the four hobbits as Strider, he is a ranger from the north and hails from Gondor, the kingdom of men. He joins the Fellowship of the Ring to help defeat Sauron. His close relationship with the elves gives him advantages in battle and knowledge. With the exception of Gandalf, he’s probably the strongest and most skilled member of the fellowship.  Like his ancestor Beren, he falls in love with an elf lady: Arwen. It’s revealed he’s the heir to Isildur, so he becomes king of Gondor and makes Arwen his queen. In the film adaptation, Viggo Mortensen plays this role. The knit sweater is optional, but it closely resembles his chainmail. Simply cut the sleeves off the tunic if you want to wear it on a colder day.

Arwen

Arwen is a minor character in The Lord of the Rings. Her full name is referred to as Arwen Undomiel or Arwen Evenstar. She is the daughter of the Elrond, the half-elf Lord of Rivendell, and an Celebrian, an elven noblewoman. Tolkien describes her as one of the most beautiful elves, resembling her ancestor Luthien. Like her ancestor, she falls in love with a man. Like Luthien loved Beren, Arwen loved Aragorn. When he is crowned King of Gondor, they marry, and she becomes queen. She decides to stay mortal so she can die with Aragorn. While she never appears in the books, Arwen appears in all three film adaptations. She carries Frodo across the Ford of Bruinen and fights the Orcs with her sword, Hadhafang. The role is played by actress Liv Tyler.

Gollum from The Lord of the Rings

Gollum from Lord of the Rings

Sauron’s Ring of Power changed many hands throughout the centuries, until one fateful day, it ended up in the grubby hands of Gollum (Andy Serkis). The Ring corrupted him, mind and body, but added years to his already miserable life, and Gollum grew addicted to the power it granted him until one day, a Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins made Gollum quit cold turkey. As a result, Gollum swore revenge against the Bagginses, including Bilbo’s nephew Frodo.

Ringwraith

The Ringwraiths, often referred to as the Nazgûl, are Sauron’s ghastly indentured servants. Originally mortal men, they pledged their service to both Sauron and the One Ring in order to achieve immortality. With no visible physical forms, they are identified by their raggedy black robes.

Frodo Baggins

Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) is the protagonist and primary Ring Bearer in the Lord of the Rings book, video game, and film series. He is a meek Hobbit who is tasked with delivering the One Ring to Mount Doom, overcoming physical and mental struggle along the way. He eventually becomes one of Middle Earth’s greatest heroes.

Legolas

In The Lord of the Rings, Legolas is an elf and a member of the Fellowship of the Rings. He has superhuman speed and skills due to his elven heritage, which comes in handy when surfing and slinging arrows at the same time.
