Dallas Winston
Dallas “Dally” Winston is a character in The Outsiders. He is a Greaser. He had a difficult childhood with a father who neglected him. At age ten, he was arrested. While Dally is mean to others, he cares for the greasers and treats them like family. He expresses a particular love and care towards Johnny. When Johnny dies, Dally is overcome with grief and robs a grocery store. The police arrive and he intentionally aims at them with an unloaded gun. An officer shoots back and he dies from the bullet wound. Matt Dillon plays Dallas in the 1983 movie adaptation.
Darrel Curtis
Darrel “Darry” Curtis Jr. is a character in The Outsiders. He is the oldest Curtis brother and leader of the household. Since the passing of their parents, he has taken on the role of a parental figure. Darrel is mostly serious, but at times his concern for his younger siblings can manifest into anger, which causes him to act rashly. Ponyboy describes his older brother as “someone who grew up too fast and handling things no one his age should have to.” Patrick Swayze plays Darrel in the 1983 movie adaptation.
Sodapop Curtis
Sodapop Curtis is a character in The Outsiders. He is the middle child of the Curtis brothers – and often caught in the middle of family fights, much to the frustration of Daryl, as he usually sticks up for Ponyboy. Described as movie star handsome, Sodapop is a magnet for the ladies. He also works at the gas station with his best friend, Steve. The book, written by S.E. Hinton, notes that he’s one of the few guys who doesn’t drink alcohol to have a good time. Rob Lowe plays Sodapop in the 1983 movie adaptation.
Steve Randle
Steve Randle is a character in The Outsiders. He is a Greaser who likes to comb his hair in swirls. His specialty is cars, so he works at the gas station with his best friend, Sodapop. Although unlike the naturally easygoing Sodapop, he is cocky and blunt. While Steve can come off as rude, he cares about his friends and fellow greasers. Tom Cruise portrays Steve in the 1983 movie adaptation.
Johnny Cade from The Outsiders
Johnny Cade (played by Ralph Macchio) is a member of the greaser gang at the heart of The Outsiders. Johnny is close with Ponyboy, the main character of the film and the narrator of the book upon which it is based. They are the two youngest members of the gang. Johnny has a slight build and dark hair, which he styles to fall over one side of his face. Johnny has a scar on his left cheek from an altercation with the Socs. To create your costume, you’ll need blue jeans, black and white sneakers, and a black wig. Use a denim jacket to complete the look. To replicate Johnny’s scar, you can use a wax scar kit and some foundation that matches your skin tone. Lastly, Johnny begins carrying a switchblade after he’s attacked by the Socs, and a trick knife can play the part for you.
Sherri “Cherry” Valance from The Outsiders
Sherri “Cherry” Valance (played by Diane Lane) is a character in the film The Outsiders, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Unlike Ponyboy and Two-Bit, who are Greasers, Cherry is an extremely popular girl and a member of the Socs, though she is much nicer than many of her peers. Cherry has long, red hair and her clothing appeals to her social status, with clean lines and preppy colors.
Ponyboy Curtis from The Outsiders
Ponyboy Curtis (C. Thomas Howell) is the protagonist and narrator of The Outsiders written by S.E. Hinton. He is the youngest in the Curtis family with Soda-Pop and Darry as his older brothers. Despite being fourteen years old, he sees how the members of the Greasers function. He also learns that their rival gang, the Socs, have problems just like they do. Ponyboy is the closest to Johnny Cade in age and in mentality, as they both are more compassionate and willing to help others. The two run away together, and Ponyboy bleaches his hair so no one recognizes him. Together they save children from a burning church, which resulted in Johnny’s death. As he died, he told Ponyboy to “stay gold.” Here are three looks from the movie adaptation, where Tom Howell portrays this character. From the lines near his shoulders, it looks like he cut the sleeves off a navy blue sweater. You can also use the scissors to rip up the jeans a bit. The other two outfits are more simple, consisting of different plaid shirts. Although for his end-credits look, you will need blonde hair.
Two-Bit Matthews from The Outsiders
Goofy, lighthearted Two-Bit (brought to life onscreen by Emilio Estavez) is the ray of sunshine in the lives of Ponyboy Curtis and his friends, the titular Outsiders in S.E. Hinton’s breakthrough novel. When you’re constantly marginalized by the upper-crust Socs (pronounced so-sihez) on the other side of the tracks, sometimes a little humor is just what’s needed to get through a bad situation. Two-Bit is every bit as Greaser as the rest of his friends (although one might argue that Dallas outdoes the lot of them), but he lends a whimisical touch to his “tuff” getup with a Mickey Mouse T-shirt.
