Cartoons

Gwen from Total Drama Island

Gwen (voiced by Megan Fahlenbock) is one of the original contestants on Cartoon Network’s “reality show” Total Drama Island. She is, at first glance, the stereotype of an emo girl. But as the series progresses she sheds the stereotype and is show to be a much more fleshed-out character.

Gwen’s signature is her emo look. So dark hair with teal streaks and dark clothes are a must. She is usually shown wearing a black corset, black mini skirt with teal paneling to match her hair, black leggings, and tall black boots. She also wears a short-sleeve blue bolero shrug over longer green sleeves.

Finding a shrug like hers – or a skirt – is a little tricky. So green compression sleeves and a blue shrug can replicate her top while you might have to find fabric that matches your wig and add some fake panels onto your miniskirt to complete this look.

Gauko from Dino Girl Gauko

Gauko from Dino Girl Gauko

Netflix has some pretty interesting cartoons but one of the most unusual is Dino Girl Gauko. It’s set in a world that is like ours yet utterly bizarre with aliens, sentient comets, robot teachers. And, of course, a middle schooler who turns into a dinosaur when she gets angry. And that’s part of what makes cosplaying Naoko/Gauko (voiced by Naoko Matui or Corina Boettger in Japanese and English respectively) so tricky.

Cosplayers can choose to be her human form which is a fairly simple and cute outfit. White Mary Jane flats, white cuffed socks, and a white Dickie collar accent a flared coral skirt and a yellow t-shirt. When Naoko becomes Gauko, however, she loses her socks and shoes though everything else about her costume stays the same including her curly brown hair with bangs.

Cosplaying Gauko on the other hand requires green opaque tights and long green gloves. Cosplayers can look up a tutorial on making invisible shoes to go with their costume or they can grab a pair of green flats since Gauko wears no shoes. Gauko’s head is the real challenge though. She has the face of a dinosaur which means either using a mask or using face paint. If cosplayers choose the mask, though, they need to make sure they can keep their wig in place!

Human Bill Cipher from Gravity Falls

Human Bill Cipher from Gravity Falls

Gravity Falls – created by Alex Hirsch – is an amazing show. It is one of the most creative series that Disney has aired in a really long time, involving a whole bunch of different spooky and mysterious subjects without getting too scary.

And while the series itself was wildly creative, its fans put their own unique spins on it. One such spin is the idea of Bill Cipher (the series’ main villain who is voiced by Alex Hirsch) as he would appear in human form. Bill’s appearance in the show is only ever that of a flat triangle with a top hat and one eye. But after one fan developed the idea of a human Bill, it took off among other fans until a general appearance was agreed on.

To cosplay as human Bill, you will need a yellow wig, black top hat, black bow tie, yellow vest and coat with tails, a white undershirt, black pants, and black boots. A cane and an eye patch are also good accessories.

The hard part of this costume, however, is the details. Bill’s arms and legs and black in his canonical form and so most fan versions have his arms and legs both black as a human. You can have your coat tailored so that the sleeves are black not yellow and then add gloves. Or you can remove the sleeves entirely and try to find a pair of shoulder-length gloves though they are very hard to find. A little bit of alteration can also put the lines on Bill’s jacket to mimic the bricks of his triangular variation as well as change out the buttons on your shirt for black ones.

Finally, you can use crafting wire to make your top hate float like Bill’s does. One of the wire can be glue to the interior of the hat while the other is attached to your coat collar.
