Rusty Martin from Viva Las Vegas

Rusty Martin is a character from the 1964 film Viva Las Vegas and is played by Ann-Margret. Viva Las Vegas is a musical film following Lucky Jackson as he prepares for the first Las Vegas Grand Prix and needs an engine, but he loses his money after meeting Rusty and has to earn it back to make the race on time. This colorful film reflects the charm of both Vegas and Hollywood tropes in both the sets and costumes.

Rusty’s costumes are very bright and summery with with lots of red and yellow pieces. In her iconic dance class scene, she wears tights and a red shirt, which you can re-create by wearing a red mock neck top with sheer black tights and black spandex shorts over them. She has two different swimsuits, one being the bright all-yellow outfit with a yellow one piece, yellow cover-up and white pointed kitten heels. Another is a red one piece with buttons down the top. And finally when she goes out dancing with Lucky, she matches his yellow blazer by wearing a yellow sleeveless scoop neck dress.

Ember Lumen from Elemental

Ember Lumen (voiced by Leah Lewis) is the protagonist of the Disney and Pixar film Elemental.  Ember is made of fire and struggles to maintain her temper.  She loves her parents and helps them run their shop even though it isn’t her dream.  After she meets Wade Ripple, Ember eventually learns to reel in her temper and go after what she really wants.  To recreate Ember’s fiery look, you’ll need to be a little creative.  Layering sheer red pieces beneath your dress and jacket will help you appear more flame-like.  Use a bodysuit, pants, and heels, as well as opera gloves. Ruched or fluttery pieces will evoke more of the rippling flame appearance Ember has in the movie.  You can tuck the pants into your heels to help them taper at the bottom.  Ember’s dress is sleeveless and high-collared with a diamond-like pattern.  You can choose a longer-sleeved version or layer a beaded dress over a plain black one.  Finish the look with a flame wig, a colorful bomber jacket, and a gold belt.

Doralee from 9 to 5

Doralee Rhodes is a character from the 1980 comedy film 9 to 5, and is played by Dolly Parton. The film follows three women who are secretaries at the same office who decide to get revenge on their rude and sexist boss and begin to run the business themselves, in their own way.

human shrek from shrek 2

Human Shrek from Shrek 2

In Shrek 2, the usually unattractive ogre Shrek finds himself temporarily transformed into a handsome human.  In his new form, he must thwart Fairy Godmother‘s plan to have Fiona fall in love with Prince Charming.  Because his body changes size when he transforms, Shrek must steal new clothes when he becomes a human.  His new look includes dark green leggings, a tunic, and a red and green vest.  You may not be able to find an exact match for his vest, so choose one with a similar color palette or a silhouette.  Finish your look with a great head of brown hair, and brown shoes.

Sandra from Big Fish

Sandra is a character from the 2003 Tim Burton film Big Fish, and is played by Alison Lohman. The film Big Fish is based off of the original book by Daniel Wallace. It follows Edward Bloom who has grown old and fallen ill. His son travels to visit him and hears magical stories about his life, and finds the truth behind them. In this, he also tells the story of how he met Sandra, his love interest in the story and how he won her over.

Sandra wears lots of airy and southern style dresses and skirts, that are in bright and pastel colors. The iconic ruched light blue dress is probably the most recognizable of her costumes in the film that stands out beautifully against the field of yellow daffodils that Edward created for her. All of the lace detailing over layers of tulle adds to the southern look, as this takes place in Alabama. Add a bouquet of yellow daffodils to tie together the costume.

Little Edie from Grey Gardens

Little Edie is best known from the 1975 documentary Grey Gardens. The documentary captures the odd everyday life of Little Edie and her mother Edith, former wealthy socialites who live in their decaying Long Island estate together, where they never leave the house. We see their hilarious and very eccentric personalities as they reminisce on their younger years with the occasional singing and dancing.

Little Edie throughout the documentary changes into many different outfits and is essentially playing dress up for the camera. She shows off and tells the crew how she puts her outfits together like her signature scarf she wears around her head with a large gold pin, which she sometimes creates with different pieces of clothing, like a sweater. She used to be a dancer and has a dance leotard in the iconic dancing scene with the American flag.

Manny from Swiss Army Man

Manny is from the movie Swiss Army Man by The Daniels, and is played by Daniel Radcliffe. Manny is an animated corpse that has washed up on the shore where Hank finds him. Hank has been stranded on a deserted island and runs into him, and throughout the film helps him find the motivation to survive. Hank teaches Manny how to be a person again and through it, questions his old ways and learns about himself.

Manny wears cool tones in comparison to Hank, who wears warm ones. He wears lots of blue like his two piece suit and tie. He of course is also very dirty and his clothes are worn from being washed up on this island. This can be replicated with any kind of brown acrylic or fabric paint to add to the clothes to make them look distressed.

Scout Master Randy Ward from Moonrise Kingdom

Scout Master Randy Ward is from the film Moonrise Kingdom by Wes Anderson, and is played by Edward Norton. This character is a Khaki Scout troop leader in the film that Sam Shakusky is a part of.

Scout Master Ward wears a full khaki getup like the rest of the group with scout patches, a ranger hat, long socks, and a yellow bandana. If you’re someone who enjoys sewing, add yellow piping to the costume as a detail to bring this uniform all together.

OJ Haywood from Nope

OJ Haywood is from the movie Nope by Jordan Peele, and is played by Daniel Kaluuya. OJ is the brother of Emerald Haywood. They both run the company Haywood’s Hollywood Horses.

OJ has a very practical wardrobe and is not really concerned with style but how what he wears will serve him best. He wears lots of work wear like blue jeans and sturdy boots, paired with shirts from their own company and productions they have worked on. He stands out beside his sister Emerald and this shows his more reserved and serious personality compared to hers.

dudley do-right

Dudley Do-Right

Dudley Do-Right (voiced by Bill Scott in the cartoon from the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show and played by Brendan Fraser in the live-action comedy) is a lovable member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.  Dudley means well and works hard, but is perhaps not the sharpest tool in the Mounties’ shed.  When creating your Dudley Do-Right costume, you’ll first want to make sure you start with the signature red jacket worn as part of his uniform.  The original cartoon iteration of Dudley also has a red hat, black boots, and blue pants that puff out around his hips.  The live-action version wears striped pants, brown gloves and boots, a tan hat, and a cross-body holster.
