Arthur Claus from Arthur Christmas
In Arthur Christmas (2011), Arthur Claus (voiced by James McAvoy) is the younger son of Santa Claus. When he discovers that due to a mishap, a girl failed to have her present delivered, he sets out on a mission with his grandfather Grandsanta, the elf Bryony Shelfley, and a team of reindeer to get the gift to her before Christmas Day sunrise. Arthur wears an ugly Christmas knit sweater paired with furry slippers with light-up googly eyes.
Old Man Marley from Home Alone
“Old Man” Marley (played by the late Roberts Blossom) is the mysterious neighbor of Kevin McCallister in the 90s Christmas comedy Home Alone. Marley scares Kevin at first, as he’s rumored to be a serial killer, but it later becomes clear Marley is kind, if a little lonely, and he helps protect Kevin from Harry and Marv during their ill-fated home invasion. To effectively portray Marly, you’ll need some warm layers, a pair of snow boots, and a dark peacoat. Top off the look with a white beard and a metal snow shovel that can be used for both clearing sidewalks and thwarting bad guys.
Oogie Boogie from The Nightmare Before Christmas
Oogie Boogie (voiced by Ken Page) is the antagonist of the 90s stop motion animated film The Nightmare Before Christmas. Finding himself at odds with Jack Skellington, Oogie Boogie also manages to kidnap Sally to lure the Pumpkin King to his dungeon-like lair. Oogie Boogie is a boogeyman made of a burlap sack filled with countless brightly colored bugs that he’s eaten. Under certain lighting in his lair, he glows a bright green color. If you don’t want to shell out for the prestige costume below, you can get creative with a baggy dress and shoes (though it may be worth the splurge for the vinyl mask). For a little extra flair, try a thin layer of glow-in-the-dark paint. And don’t forget to bring some gummy worms to fill out your costume (and maybe share with friends).
Myron Larabee from Jingle All the Way
In Jingle All the Way, Myron Larabee (Sinbad) is a postal worker who wants to get that year’s hottest toy, the Turbo-Man action figure, for his family. Problem is, it’s sold out in every single store, and there’s other people like Howard Langston who are also willing to go to any lengths to get one of his own. When Howard finds himself dressed up as Turbo-Man with one of the action figures in his hand, Myron shows up in costume has Dementor, Turbo-Man’s arch-nemesis.
Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas
Jack Skellington (voiced by Chris Sarandon with Danny Elfman providing his singing voice) is the main character in the stop motion animated film The Nightmare Before Christmas. The King of Halloween, Jack finds himself dissatisfied with his usual holiday shenanigans, and with the help of his fellow Halloweentown residents, including Sally, Jack takes over Christmas. His bid to spread holiday cheer doesn’t go exactly as planned, but everyone ends up with a greater appreciation for the holiday season. Jack is a tall, skinny skeleton with a pinstripe suit. If you don’t want to wear a plastic mask, you could always paint your face, though that won’t achieve his immediately recognizable round face.
“Think About Things” Elf from Just Dance 2022
In Just Dance 2022, Daði Freyr’s pop song “Think About Things” is accompanied by a music video featuring a dancing holiday elf named Flake. The elf wears a blue outfit, with a single green glove and mismatched shoes. We opted for royal blue rather than the more accurate light blue since items are easier to source in this color. Add faux fur trim to your sweater and pants, and you’re ready to dance.
Hero Boy from The Polar Express
Hero Boy (also known as Chris and voiced by Daryl Sabara as a child and Tom Hanks as an adult) is the narrator of both the book and the movie The Polar Express. Though Chris is losing his faith in Christmas he is still holding out hope for the magic he once felt for the holiday. All it takes is a trip on the Polar Express to reignite the spark.
There are a couple of options when it comes to cosplaying Hero Boy. His yellow pajamas are a little hard to come by so you can either grab a pair of gold pajamas for men or a pair of yellow women’s pajamas. Both are fairly unisex in cut so it comes down to whichever would be more comfortable.
Throw on a blue robe and slip into a pair of brown leather loafers. Grab your ticket and you’re ready to ride The Polar Express!
Kevin McCallister from Home Alone
Kevin McCallister is the main protagonist of the Home Alone movies. When the family goes on vacation, they forget their youngest member. At first, Kevin uses the accident to his advantage, as it’s any kid’s dream to have the house to themselves. But when two criminals, Harry and Marv, who dub themselves the Wet Bandits, aim to rob the house, it’s up to Kevin to defend it. He sets up various booby traps and tricks to save the day, which makes for hilarious scenes. Macaulay Culkin stars as the clever kid turned hero in every movie except for the third installment.
Cindy Lou Who
Cindy Lou Who is a sweet young girl in How The Grinch Stole Christmas. In the original children’s book by Dr. Seuss, she is a minor character, but she becomes the secondary protagonist in the movies. This guide features her costume from the 2000 live action adaptation starring Jim Carrey as the Grinch and Taylor Momsen as Cindy. Around eight or ten years old, Cindy lives with her frazzled father in Whoville. Unlike the other Whos, she believes there is some good in the Grinch. Later she sneaks aboard the Grinch’s sleigh and helps him return all the gifts. Cindy befriends the Grinch and brings him to celebrate the holiday by singing around the giant Christmas tree. Cindy also sings “Where Are You Christmas?” which was specifically written for that movie.
