Doc Holliday

Doc Holliday is a character in the American Western film Tombstone (1993). Although portrayed by Val Kilmer in the movie, he was actually a real person in history. In the mid 1800s, Doc was an actual cowboy, gunman, and gambler, as well as close friend and associate of lawman Wyatt Earp. He played a significant role in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, developing a reputation of killing more than a dozen men in his altercations.

Mattie Ross from True Grit (2010)

In the 2010 movie True Grit, Mattie Ross (played by Hailee Steinfeld) is a headstrong young 14-year-old girl who enlists the help of U.S. Marshal and bounty hunger Reuben J. “Rooster” Cogburn to bring the man who killed her father to justice.  Cogburn initially tells Mattie to return home but she insists on accompanying him on his quest to track down Tom Chaney, and she eventually proves herself a capable ally.  Mattie wears her father’s coat and hat, which are clearly too large for her, over her Victorian period clothing.  You can find a replica bodice jacket online, but if the cost is too high, you can also use a modern blazer with a similar silhouette.

Daniel Plainview from There Will Be Blood

Daniel Plainview from There Will Be Blood

Daniel Plainview (played by Daniel Day-Lewis) is not what you would call a nice guy. And that’s not at all surprising given that he’s based of a real-life oil tycoon. The wild west was, well, wild. And the oil tycoons were some of the roughest of all. A fact Daniel Day-Lewis doesn’t let the audience forget!

Amassing the wealth of an oil baron isn’t exactly easy. And I wouldn’t recommend running around a convention acting like Plainview. But you can copy his look pretty easily! Start with a brown felt hat and a good pair of brown boots. Add those to a brown three-piece suit and a white button down shirt. Finish off the look with a pocket watch on a chain and you’re ready for your own wild west adventure.

James West from Wild Wild West

James West from The Wild Wild West

Pitched as “James Bond of the Wild West,” Jim West was the anachronistically tech-savvy, brawling, and oh, so debonair Secret Service agent for President Ulysses S. Grant. Together with his partner, Artemus Gordon (Ross Martin), the wild, wild West (Robert Conrad) traveled the country by train and stopped various threats to the nation’s security following the Civil War. Did he get sidetracked by beautiful women, stuntmen, and steampunk-esque obstacles along the way? Of course, but that’s all part of what made this classic western show all the more entertaining.

Al Swearengen

Al Swearengen from Deadwood

Al Swearengen is a character in the television series, Deadwood. Based on the historical figure of the same name, Al owns The Gem Saloon, a local saloon and brothel. He acts as a merciless mob boss in relation to the other characters. He is played by Ian McShane. To create gray hairs, use white face paint on a toothbrush and brush through the wig and mustache. You can use black eyeshadow to make the small goatee below his lip.
