Games
Oz from Monster Prom
Oz is the yellow playable character in the visual novel game Monster Prom. Oz is established as non-binary with masculine pronouns by default (though these pronouns can be changed in-game). Oz is made entirely of fear, which accounts for his appearance as being made of dark matter. His school clothes include a golden yellow cardigan and dark grey pants, with a gold watch. To create Oz’s look, you can use a black body suit and add his white eyes and eyebrows with fabric pens. If you’re feeling particularly creative, you could craft the small black creatures (who represent individual phobias) that attach to him by using black felt, a little stuffing, and the same white fabric pens.
Ring Fit Trainee
Ring Fit Trainee is the main character in Ring Fit Adventure, a young woman with workout clothes and orange hair that resembles a flame. Along with Ring, a fiery golden ring, the trainer is on a mission to take down Dragaux. Ring Fit Trainee is the Nintendo Switch’s spiritual successor to Wii Fit Trainer, who also whips gamers into shape. Ring Fit Trainee cameos as an unlockable spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Trucy Wright from Ace Attorney
Trucy Wright (Kira Buckland / Chieko Higuchi) is Ace Attorney Phoenix Wright‘s adoptive daughter, biologically descended from a long line of talented magicians, the Gramarye family. When she’s not making mischief, doing magic tricks, or a bit of both, she moonlights as an investigative partner for Phoenix’s law agency.
Trucy’s magician roots are evident in the way she dresses herself. This tutorial covers the basic items that make up her costume, but for a more detailed cape with a broach and the playing card-inspired trim, I recommend following this tutorial.
Kicks from Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Kicks is one of the wandering merchants that show up on your island at random in the game Animal Crossing: New Horizons. He sets himself up in the town square when he arrives and stays until late that night. Kicks is a skunk, but don’t let that put you off. Because if there is one thing about him that doesn’t stink, it’s his sense of fashion! Whether it’s shoes, socks, handbags, or accessories, he’s always got the latest and greatest!
The challenge with Animal Crossing characters is deciding how much of their animal nature to include. You can copy Kicks’ look by just copying his clothes or you can use black body paint and white body paint to achieve his classic skunk markings. You will also need peach body paint to create his nose.
In both cases you will want a white wig and pomade for styling as well as a yellow driver’s cap. A cream button down shirt, tan suspenders, yellow knee pants, brown boots, and white gloves make up the rest of his outfit. If you decide to go for the animal-accurate look you will also want black ears and a skunk tail in addition to your body paint.
Doctor Eggman
Doctor Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik is the arch-nemesis of Sonic the Hedgehog and the main villain of the series. He’s a mad scientist with a rotund build and bald head, both reminiscent of an egg. In his quest to take over the world, Doctor Eggman unleashes his army of robots called Badniks on the world. In the 2020 film, Jim Carrey gives him a slimmer portrayal.
Stan S. Stanman from Monkey Island
Stan S. Stanman is a salesman who frequently encounters Guybrush Threepwood in Monkey Island. Stan has sold everything from used ships and coffins to courtroom souvenirs. He is shrewd in the worst way, willing to do almost anything in order to close a sale. Stan wears an oversized white hat with a red brim and a loudly patterned jacket, as well as red breeches. There are a lot of ways you could duplicate Stan’s jacket, including using a blazer, a flannel, or making your own with fabric paint if you’re feeling creative! You may even get lucky and find a one-of-a-kind vintage piece like the longer coat below to fit your needs. To create the red brim pattern on Stan’s hat, use red fabric paint or markers.
Marcus Holloway from Watch Dogs 2
Marcus Holloway (voiced by Ruffin Prentiss) is the main protagonist of Watch Dogs 2. Marcus was born in Los Angeles, but raised in Oakland, and becomes a prolific hacktivist, gaining entrance to sensitive documents regarding a government surveillance program under the name Retr0. Marcus is eventually recruited by DedSec, and joins in order to take down Blume and CTOS 2.0. Marcus wears dark jeans, brown boots, and a blue jacket. He uses glasses, and wears darker sunglasses and a face covering to obscure his identity when necessary. His phone in the game is based on an iPhone 5, but you can use your own smartphone to complete the look. If you don’t want to purchase Marcus’s specific bag, you could use a dark colored messenger bag and personalize it with your own pins and buttons.
Bendy from Bendy and the Ink Machine
Bendy is the mascot of Joey Drew Studios. The studio is in fact real but a fictional version is the setting of the incredible horror-puzzle-action game Bendy and the Ink Machine. In his original form, Bendy is a classic-style cartoon with a white face and white gloves. His hair, body, and shoes are all black.
To get Bendy’s look, you only need a few select pieces. Black dress shoes with large buckles, a black bodysuit, and large white gloves make up the majority of the costume. You can get Bendy’s hair style by using a short black wig and some wig styling gel. Mime makeup will recreate the rest of his look. You can even replicate Bendy’s cartoon-style eyes by painting your eyelids with black with a white wedge so you’ll look just like Bendy when you close your eyes.
The Nurse from Dead by Daylight
Sally Smithson became a nurse at Crotus Prenn Asylum after she was widowed as a newlywed. After decades of abuse at the hands of patients and fellow staff, she strangled them all in one night and vanished. As the ghoulish Nurse, she serves the Entity of Dead by Daylight as a killer, teleporting across the playing field using the last breaths she stole from her victims. The Nurse carries a hacksaw and wears a white dress. Her appearance is made all the more creepy by the white hood she wears over her face. You can purchase a zentai hood or use a white pillowcase for this part of her costume, as either will evoke the same terrifying effect.
Isabelle from Animal Crossing: New Horizons
In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Isabelle is more or less the go-to person on every island when you need something done for its inhabitants. Anything other than construction, that is. She’s generally in a happy mood and, should news run thin, eager to share the latest and greatest news in television shows.
There are a few ways that you can achieve Isabelle’s look. The first way uses body paint to mimic the color of Isabelle’s fur. It can be applied to your face, neck, hands, arms, and legs. The other option is to use blush on your cheeks to mimic Isabelle’s blush but otherwise skip over her fur with the exception of yellow leggings. You can also add ears and a tail to both looks since Isabelle is a dog-type villager.
Regardless of which look you choose, you will want to use a blonde wig for the ponytail on top of her head, a pink button down, a white skirt, and black shoes. Isabelle’s shirt is a Nook Inc. branded shirt which might be hard to find. But a bleach pen and a little DIY can turn a basic pink button down into your very own Nook Inc. merchandise. It’ll be the last piece of the perfect Isabelle cosplay!
