Ulrich Stern from Code Lyoko

Ulrich Stern (voiced in English by Barbara Weber-Scaff) is one of the Lyoko Warriors and a main character in the French cartoon Code Lyoko.  Ulrich is well known to be the best fighter amongst his friends, including Yumi Ishiyama, for whom he has romantic feelings.  His relationship with Yumi sometimes leads him to clash with Willian Dunbar, who also has feelings for her.  Ulrich’s standard clothing includes cargo pants and a t-shirt all in shades of brown and green.  His warrior costume can be recreated by choosing tightly-fitted compression wear in similar colors and pairing them with a pair of katana swords, which are his primary weapons.

Robin Hood from Disney’s Robin Hood (1973)

Disney’s Robin Hood is one of its most enduring films. From its debut in 1973 to today, it’s a Disney classic that’s still delighting families everywhere. Its dashing hero (voiced by Brian Bedford) stole into audience’s hearts like only a fox can and he’s still there today! No matter how many times Robin’s tale is retold, Bedford’s rendition is among the most loved.

There are two ways to approach this costume. One uses body paint and a face paint kit to get a whole-body look like Robin’s. The other is to leave your face and arms alone, then rely on orange leggings, a fox tail, and fox ears to mimic Robin’s look. In both cases you’ll want medieval-style shoes, a green tunic, a broad leather belt, and a yellow Robin Hood hat. The hat’s color is key because in most versions with a similar hat it is green. The yellow sets this aside as Disney’s classic Robin as much as the fox tail does.

Finally you’ll want a bow and arrow as well as a quiver. As with all weapons, however, make sure the they’re allowed at the convention you plan to attend!

Dr. Amino frm Ben 10

Dr. Animo from Ben 10

Dr. Animo is a mad scientist. And you can take that just about any way you want. He’s angry. He’s reckless with his science. And, well, his conversations with his stuffed mutant toys are a little involved. Voice by Dwight Schultz, Dr. Animo is no fan of Ben or his family. And he will stop at nothing to mutate the whole world until it fits his vision!

Dr. Animo has several different costumes but they all share a similar base. A dark grey tank top and brown pants that tuck into tall black boots. Two boot options are listed above, one that is more of a riding boot and the other is a pair of rain boots. Each has its uses depending on where you’re going to wear the costume and which works better for your needs.

In addition to that base you’ll need tall black gloves that you remove the fingertips from and either a silver circlet for your head or a colander that you can make antennae for using tin foil. The foil won’t create an exact match but it’ll get you close without needing a welder! He has other gear including a headset and a chest harness that you can get close to using the items listed above.

Other versions of Dr. Animo wear a long green cape over a bare chest instead of the tank top and chest harness. You’ll have to tatter the edges of the cape by hand, however.

Batman from Batman the Animated Series

Batman from Batman: The Animated Series

There are more iterations of Batman than most people can count. And each version has a flair all his own. In Batman: The Animated Series, Kevin Conroy voices a Batman steeped in neo-noir style. And it has made this version of the caped crusader a favorite among long-time and new fans alike.

This version of Batman is fairly old-school when it comes to his costume. A grey body suit and soft touch fabric paint will give you the base layer of his costume as well as the perfect insignia, since the style of his insignia is often the most specific change. On top of that you’ll want a pair of black bike shorts and the yellow utility belt. Bike shorts will give a little more coverage than the actual costume but they might also be more comfortable!

Add on some gloves, boots, a cowl, and a cape, and you’ve finished out the costume!

There is one small note on the cape: It is black on the outside and blue on the inside. You can always skip this detail but if you’re determined to get the same look, you have two options. One is to order the same cape in both black and blue, then cut the hems into points and glue them together on all sides using fabric glue until they are one piece. The other option is order a few extra bottles of the blue fabric paint and paint the inside of your cape. Both options will change how the cape moves and how you’ll have to clean it. So keep these factors in mind when choosing how you alter it!

Sebastain Shaw from Marvel Comics

Sebastian Shaw

Sebastian Shaw has been one of the X-Men’s biggest foes since his introduction to the franchise in January of 1980. He is a mutant capable of absorbing many different kinds of energy. But his status as a mutant hardly puts him on the same side as Wolverine, Charles Xavier, and the others. As a member of the Hellfire club he is determined to take over the world, even going to far as to fund the Sentinel program so that it will hunt down mutants that defy him. And while Kevin Bacon put his own spin on the character in the most recent run of X-Men movies, the Earth-616 comic book version is by far the most iconic.

Shaw often goes by the moniker of Black King and his costume is fittingly grandiose. He wears a coat with tails and a waist coat with an ascot. The colors vary from costume to costume but the elements stay the same. Shaw also wears knee breeches, tall socks, and shoes with buckles on them. A more modern twist is a tailored suit with an ascot but the comic version usually maintains this mid-century look.

jiminycricket-pinocchio-character

Jiminy Cricket

“Cricket’s the name…Jiminy Cricket!” Jiminy Cricket is the secondary protagonist in the classic Disney film, Pinocchio. He is a wise-cracking yet dependable cricket who wears a top hat and always carries an umbrella. To help Pinocchio become a real boy, the Blue Fairy appoints him as his conscience. However he proves too high strung and impatient to be a caretaker. But ultimately his loving heart gives him the strength to grow and therefore realize he wants Pinocchio to succeed as they are truly best friends. Furthermore, Jiminy Cricket has been used as a mascot for the Disney company alongside the likes of Mickey Mouse and Tinkerbell.

Lars Barriga from Steven Universe

Lars Barriga is a minor character in the Cartoon Network show, Steven Universe. He formerly resided in Beach City as an employee at the Big Donut. He was in a relationship with his co-worker, Sadie. Prior to his abduction to the Gem Homeworld, he was a normal human. When found dead, Steven resurrected him with his healing powers. As a result, similar to Lion, he turned pink and obtained magical abilities. Following his resurrection, Lars traveled the galaxy as a captain with the Off Colors, a group of misfit Gem fusions. He has the same goal as the Crystal Gems: to rebel against the Diamonds and protect Earth. In Steven Universe: Future, he returns to Beach City to visit Steven, and is at peace with his break-up with Sadie. A popular and widely accepted fan theory is that Lars is transgender. As you can see, Lars has many outfits to choose from, each representing a different point in his life. Featured are his human look, his space captain look, and post-series look.

Franz Hopper from Code Lyoko

Franz Hopper from Code Lyoko

In Code Lyoko, he might go by Frank Hopper but this ingenious scientist’s real name is Waldo Franz Schaeffer. He has had three voice actors and one live-action actor across different seasons and incarnations of the show. In this write-up we’re taking a look at his most common cartoon appearance since it makes for an easy and comfortable costume. Best of all, all of the pieces can be used either for day to day wear or for many, many other cosplays and costumes!

All you need to copy Hopper’s outfit is a brown turtleneck, black slacks, brown shoes, and a lab coat. Add in a shaggy grey wig and some costume glasses and you’re good to go! A quick note on the glasses: If you don’t like the frames listed above or they don’t fit properly, you can snag a pair of reading glasses from a store and remove the lenses. They will probably run you between $10 and $20 and are a versatile piece to keep in your costume or cosplay collection.

Dream from Sandman

Dream from Sandman

Most people know him as Sandman but this immortal being’s name is actually Dream. Brother to death and bane of Satan’s existence, he is one of many immortals that drift in and out of the world of humans. Like his siblings, Dream’s appearance changes depending on the era and where in the world he finds himself. This gives cosplayers a lot of options, though there are a few things that remain constant no matter when or where Dream finds himself.

Dream’s clothes are always in shades of black and white. And, more often than not, his black hair is in wild disarray. When he’s not around humans he favors a pair of black pants, black boots, and a long flowing sweater or robe left open over his bare chest.

Even when Dream dresses to suit a particular time period he’s not always accurate. When you’re timeless, the fine details of mortal fashion probably don’t matter all that much. In the case of the Victorian era – or in many modern subcultures – the printed coat and pants paired with a white ruffled shirt and black boots is classic Dream.

Whichever look you choose, you’ll need a black wig styled in a bit of a fly-away style and a contour kit to mimic Dream’s shadowed and sharp look.

william dunbar from code lyoko

William Dunbar from Code Lyoko

William Dunbar (voiced in English by David Gasman) is one of the main characters of the French cartoon Code Lyoko.  William has romantic feelings for fellow warrior Yumi Ishiyama, which makes it difficult for him to get along with Ulrich Stern, as they both vie for her attention.  Aside from his intense interest in Yumi, William is often aloof and laidback.  To recreate his warrior costume, you’ll want to focus on tightly-fitted clothing in black and orange.  You can use compression gear and a surfing rash guard to mimic the skintight bodysuit look.
