Women

Elsa van Helsing from Frankenweenie

In Tim Burton’s universe, Winona Ryder has a way of bringing to life girls that are special mix of sweet and sharp. Elsa van Helsing is no exception. She cares deeply for the people in her life but she’s not exactly a fan of the fluff and frippery that others seem to like.

Elsa’s appearance is a great example of this. She wears her black hair up in long pigtails and opts for a high-neck shirt, a dark pinafore dress, grey tights, and black shoes. You can also use grey face paint if you want to go for the “stepped out of a black and white movie” look. You can also use dusky makeup colors to create a similar look without going for full-face coverage. And of course you’ll want a stuffed poodle to play the part of your very own Persephone

Hester from The School for Good and Evil

Hester is the daughter of a distinguished witch. Perhaps one of the most distinguished witches, specifically the one who lived in a gingerbread house. After losing her mother and arriving at the School for Evil, however, Hester begins to build her own legacy and set herself up as a distinguished student in her own right.

In the first book of the series Hester is describes as ” a tall girl with greasy black hair streaked red, black lipstick, a ring in her nose, and a terrifying tattoo of a buck-horned, red-skulled demon around her neck”. She is also said to have black eyes and dress in the black robes the students wear in the School for Evil.

The nose ring is easily replicated with a fake that pinches your nose and black lipstick is a must for the costume. Her black eyes, however, should only be replicated using contacts from a certified opthometrist as the low-cost versions off the internet carry serious risks to your eyes. To replicate her hair you’ll want to get a wig and some clip-in red extensions. Pomade can replicate a greasy look or you can leave that part out.

The robes aren’t described in great detail so a fairly plain witch’s costume is suggested. They range from witches robes to the kind of dark dress and collar that someone with Hester’s style might prefer.

Finally you’ll need body paint to recreate her tattoo. Then you’re ready to go off and take your own classes at the School for Evil.

molly mcgee from the ghost and molly mcgee

Molly McGee from The Ghost and Molly McGee

Molly (voiced by Ashley Burch) is the perpetually upbeat tween at the heart of the Disney Channel series The Ghost and Molly McGee.  Molly becomes a companion to Scratch, a grumpy ghost who has been cursed to spend time with her.  Molly enjoys singing, picnics in the park, and striving to make the world a better place.  Her outfit consists of a denim vest, colorful skirt over bike shorts, and bright high top sneakers.  Finding a skirt to match Molly’s can be tricky, so go for  a palette that’s close or a similar silhouette.  A longer skirt can always be shortened if you find one with the perfect colors.

Elizabeth Swann from Pirates of the Caribbean

Elizabeth Swann from Pirates of the Caribbean

Keira Knightley is radiant in just about any role. But her time as Elizabeth Swann marked one of her best-known characters. Her performance brought an entire generation of woman into the world of pirates. And that’s before she ever became Pirate King!

Elizabeth’s style is somewhat hard to replicate because the fashions of the time were so ornate and specific. You can get close with a rococo gown, hoops to fill it out, thigh high white socks, and white slippers dyed yellow (just be sure to get the dye that works with the material). The wig listed above works as-is but you can also style it using this tutorial. Finally you’ll want your doubloon. That’s not the sort of thing you want to leave behind on your pirate adventure.

Star from The Lost Boys

Star from The Lost Boys

The movie might have been titled The Lost Boys but Jami Gertz stole every scene as the vampire coven’s one woman, Star. She looks after Laddie and is supposed to be with David. That is until Michael comes along and changes everything.

Star’s look is one that was popular with certain groups in the ’80s. She wears her long dark curls loose and opts for a flowing maxi skirt and simple tank top to combat the California heat. Her sandals aren’t ideal for the motorcycle rides her coven is fond of but she makes them work. With her shawl, jingling belt, and stack of bracelets, she is a lowkey beauty on the boardwalk.

Jessica Stanley from Twilight

Jessica Stanley is a minor character in the Twilight saga. She is a human who attends Forks High School and befriends Bella Swan on her first day. When they eat lunch together, Jessica explains what she knows about the “freakish” Cullens. Like every girl in school, she thinks Edward is incredibly attractive, but according to her, no one is good enough for him. When Edward starts paying attention to Bella, she becomes jealous, but she still remains a friend, eventually attending Bella and Edward’s wedding in the last novel. Besides, she has a bigger crush on Mike Newton. All in all, despite being a slight braggart and gossip, Jessica is your average teenage girl. In addition to Bella, her other friends include Angela Weber and Eric Yorkie. Pitch Perfect star Anna Kendrick portrays Jessica in the movie adaptations.

Academy D.Va

Academy D.Va from Overwatch

Announced in 2019, the Academy skin for D.Va (voiced by Carlet Chung in the English version) was a new spin on the character’s look. Prior to that most of D.Va’s looks were spins on her usual pilot’s jumpsuit.

The skin puts her into a college uniform complete with headphones, blazer, plaid skirt, blue socks, and white sneakers with pink laces. Getting the exact jacket is a little tricky, though, since there are so many small details. Soft touch fabric paint lets you add in the details without creating stiff areas on your coat. Start with a white base to make the colors pop, then edge the lapels and hem in yellow while add pocket lines with pink. Black pig tails, pink headphones, a white undershirt and pink tie finish off the look.

ripley from lumberjanes

Ripley from Lumberjanes

Ripley is the youngest and most energetic of the Lumberjanes crew.  She often launches herself toward danger without hesitation, which can sometimes cause trouble for the older members of her cabin, Jo, April, Molly, and Mal.  Ripley’s outfit consists of a long-sleeved shirt layered under an orange tee, with red and white athletic shorts and tube socks.  Her hair, which was long when she first arrived at camp, is cut short with a dyed patch at the front after she gets bubblegum stuck in her hair.

Anne Boleyn from The Tudors

Anne Boleyn from The Tudors

Anne Boleyn – both the character and the actual woman – was cunning and clever. She knew how life at court worked and did all she could to make the best life for herself in a world that seemed stacked against her. Natalie Dormer’s portrayal of her is a fan favorite from The Tudors and brought new attention to the tragic life lived by the mother of Queen Elizabeth the First.

Though Anne wears several gowns on the show one of her most popular is the yellow gown she wears to Catherine’s funeral. Given the intricate styles of the Tudor era it is hard to easily replicate the dress. Etsy sellers have a few listed, one of which is pictured to the left in the image above. The option to the right is from Amazon. With either option you’ll want a hoop to fill out the skirt, a brunette wig, and a Boleyn necklace. A pair of thigh high socks and white ballet slippers dyed yellow finish the look.
