Gawain from The Green Knight

Gawain and the Green Knight is a classic Arthurian tale. And like Arthur himself, the knights have been gaining new audiences as their tales are once again retold.  Written for the screen  by David Lowery and starring the incredible Dev Patel, the movie is billed as a fantasy retelling of an already fantastical tale. And one can only hope Gawain fares is well in the adaptation as in the original, green sash and all.

Gawain has a yellow cloak that can be reproduced with golden fabric, or a white capelet and Rit dye. Because this movie is stylized and not aimed at perfect historical accuracy, a set of fold-top leather boots (which are great in other cosplays) are also perfect for the costume, as well as a pair of black pants, a chain mail shirt, and a black tunic. A sword and scabbard can be slid into a a medieval belt and you’re ready for your own Arthurian adventure.

Shovel Knight from Shovel Knight

Shovel Knight

Shovel Knight might not be the tallest fighter on the field. But if his enemies underestimate him, that’s their problem. Literally. Armed with his trusty shovel blade and guided by the code of Shovelry he is almost always the last one standing when the battle is over.

Taking on the Shovel Knight’s helm requires a little bit of DIY. You’ll need to get a set of costume armor, some spray paint, painter’s tape, super glue, and large fake horns.

Paint the armor blue then – when it’s fully cured – use the painter’s tape and whatever newspaper you have lying around to cover up the majority of the armor. Then use the yellow spray paint to put on the edging details. That includes a ring of yellow around the seal where you have glued the horns to your helmet after removing them from their original helmet.

Finally grab a trust shovel and head to battle! An actual shovel may violate the rules of some cons, however. In those cases you can follow a tutorial like this one to make one that is safe to take into the venue.

Soul of Cinder from Dark Souls

Soul of Cinder from Dark Souls

In Dark Souls, the Soul of Cinder is a being made up of all previous lords of Cinder. This not only makes it incredibly hard to beat but also terrifying to behold. Getting the exact look takes some painting skill and possibly wearable pyrotechnics (which we really don’t recommend).  But we’ve found pieces that will get you close!

To start you’ll want a black compression shirt and compression pants. They’re tight fitting and breathable so your clothes won’t get twisted up under your armor and you won’t overheat too quickly. On top of that you’ll want a set of knight’s armor, though we recommend plastic over metal for ease of movement. You’ll also need a set of swords to deal with the challengers you’re sure to encounter. If you’ve got a bit of extra money to spend you can get a Cinder replica helmet. They aren’t easily affordable, however, and with some paint a standard knight helmet should do the trick. And finally a can of chalky gray spray paint topped with an oxidizing effects paint kit should help give your armor the eternally burned look Soul of Cinder is known for.
