Hayley Williams in the “Cinnamon” Music Video
Paramore lead singer Hayley Williams’ aesthetic has evolved considerably since her band’s early 2000s punk-rock heyday. Life events have prompted both an inspiring, thought-provoking solo album and steps away from her iconic orange hair color. The colorful music video for “Cinnamon” concludes a story sequence which, using fantastical and slightly disturbing imagery, conveys Hayley Williams’ recovery process following traumatic life experiences and depression.
Note: In these videos, Hayley Williams wears the front of her hair bleached blond, while the back side is dark brown. In “Cinnamon,” it is heavily teased and tied back with a scrunchie. You can achieve this style by clipping dark brown hair extensions into the back of a blond wig.
Strive from “Starlight Brigade” by TWRP
Strive is the protagonist of the music video for TWRP’s song, “Starlight Brigade,” featuring singer Dan Avidan (better known for his more provocative stage name). The young elfin humanoid, a citizen of the planet Moebius, finds himself pulled into an intergalactic journey with the band’s cartoon Starlight Brigade personas.
Using blue and white face-paint as a base, you can follow GhostlyCosplay’s makeup tutorial for Strive’s makeup to complete this look.
Rin from Shelter
In the music video for the Porter Robinson single Shelter, Rin is a teenage girl who finds herself alone in the world. It’s revealed that a planetary object was on a collision course with planet Earth, and her scientist father labored for years to build a spacecraft for her to survive, forever plugged into the spacecraft’s simulation to experience life.
Billie Eilish Yellow Outfit from Bad Guy
In the music video for Bad Guy, Billie Eilish smashes through the backdrop in an all-yellow outfit with hoodie and baggy cargo pants. Along with removing her Invisalign and wearing a snorkeling mask, this outfit reflects her goofy streetwear style that doesn’t take itself too seriously. You pay the price for the authentic pieces from Reserved Essential or opt for the more attainable alternatives… we’ve listed both.
Shy Ronnie
In the Saturday Night Live digital shorts “Shy Ronnie” and “Shy Ronnie 2: Ronnie & Clyde”, Shy Ronnie (Andy Samberg) is an overly shy character who duos with Clyde (played by Rihanna). After Rihanna sings the hook and it’s time for Ronnie to rap, he finds himself too awkward to perform, instead whispering into the mic, wetting his pants, and letting out an awkward haHAA laugh that has since become a meme and Twitch emote. For this costume, use the fake blood for his left foot, where he accidentally shoots himself while robbing a bank.
Clyde from Ronnie & Clyde
In the Lonely Island follow-up to Shy Ronnie, Shy Ronnie 2: Ronnie & Clyde, Clyde (played by Rihanna) is a 1920s gangster who robs a bank with Shy Ronnie. Maybe not the best choice of criminal accomplice or musical partner ever, as Shy Ronnie shoots himself in the foot and whispers his commands to the hostages. Supply your own Jon Hamm to complete the look.
David Bowie from Life on Mars
In the music video for the 1971 single “Life on Mars”, glam rock star David Bowie is dressed in a turquoise “ice-blue” designer suit and heavy makeup. This unique look presents yet another facet of Bowie alongside his personas Ziggy Stardust and the Thin White Duke.
White and Nerdy Weird Al
White and Nerdy is a persona of Weird Al Yankovic
shown in the music video for the titular song from his 2006 album Straight Outta Lynwood. The look and song is a parody of Chamillionaire’s hit song “Ridin’ Dirty.”
Freddie Mercury as Bet Lynch from “I Want To Break Free”
Queen’s 1984 video for their song, “I Want To Break Free” featured the foursome dressed in drag as characters from “Coronation Street” a long-running soap opera from the United Kingdom. Unfortunately, MTV execs and fans in the United States didn’t get it and it caused a minor controversy, stalling their career stateside, until at least the early 90s, after frontman, Freddie Mercury’s death. The video is now considered a camp classic.
Childish Gambino from This Is America
In the music video for “This is America”, Childish Gambino (Donald Glover) raps and dances as an expression of various themes including being black in America, gun violence, and police brutality. His gold chains are a nod to slavery, his movements to caricatures of Jim Crow, and the yellow shoes, who knows. Sew black buttons on the fly to get the pants matching as close as possible.
