Starship Troopers

Originally written by Robert Heinlein in 1959, Sony adapted the novel Starship Troopers into a 1997 film that tanked in the box office only to gain a cult following. The film follows Johnny Rico (played by Casper Van Dien who later went on to make several cameos in other Starship Trooper films) as he graduates high school and enlists in the army. Unlike military service in America today, however, military service is required to gain full rights as a citizen, prompting Rico to join despite his parents’ protests. Rico and his friends go on to fight Bugs and Arachnids, members of an insect-like species that have been fighting humans for control of new planets since the beginning of off-Earth human colonies.

The most unique piece of the Starship Trooper uniform is the helmet. It’s modeled on just about any other military helmet of course. But the specific styling is what really sets aside a Starship Trooper. Unfortunately a premade unit is pretty pricy. There are a few other options though. You can get a 3-D printer file for it here. Or you can find craft foam tutorials like this one on YouTube.

From there, the rest of the costume is fairly easy. Grey tactical pants and, a black t-shirt and a chest protector The chest protector listed above is very close to the version the Troopers wear but it has white detailing. Black acrylic paint will cover that up since the protector is made of nylon. And of course you’ll need your trusty laser rifle.

Douglas Quaid from Total Recall

In Total Recall, Douglas Quaid (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) is a construction engineer on Earth in the year 2084. Quaid is having recurring dreams about Mars and a strange woman who lives there. He has never visited the planet but has always wanted to. Quaid decides to get to the “Rekall” center to have an implanted memory of Mars so he would not physically have to go. Before the Martian memories could be implanted Quaid violently reacts and has an episode so extreme “Rekall” agents sedate him, erase his memory of visiting and toss him in a taxi. We discover Quaid’s memories have been erased before and now he is under attack with clues from his former self known as “Hauser” telling him how to get back to Mars. Quaid’s quest is to get to Mars and to find the strange woman Melina. Quaid’s blue-collar working man’s clothes serve functionality. For a more complete look, you can tear some of the fabric and add fake blood on your face/body and clothes.

Melina from Total Recall

In Total Recall, Melina (played by Rachel Ticotin) is the woman from Quaid’s Martian dreams. She is a resistance fighter seeking to overthrow Cohaagen. Quaid finds her at her club The Last Resort where Quaid tells her he doesn’t remember who he is. Together Melina and Quaid join forces to bring justice to the people of Mars. Melina mixes black and brightly patterned clothes. She wears a creamy eyeliner and a mauve colored lip.

Lori from Total Recall

Lori played by Sharon Stone in Total Recall is a major antagonist. She is a spy working for Vilos Cohaagen and pretending to be Douglas Quaid‘s devoted wife. Lori is in the middle of exercise when  Doug rushes home after a Rekall appointment turned to violence. He exclaims to Lori his friends and others were now trying to kill him. Lori tells him to stay calm leaves the room to go get help. She returns with bullets and starts shooting at him. Lori tells Quaid he has had a memory implant before and years of his memories are simply fictional. Lori was never his wife to begin with and simply was there to keep an eye on him. Lori tries to trick him one last time and tells Quaid that she would like to show him what kind of woman she really is. Quaid does not trust her and soon realizes she has called for back up. He knocks Lori out and escapes. One of the men approaching turns out to be Lori’s real husband Richter. Lori wears Jane Fondaesque work out gear and mixes bright colors with suspender leggings. This costume is a simple easy choice for Halloween night or any sci-fi movie convention.
