Banshee from the X-Men

Banshee – also known as Sean Cassidy – is an Irish mutant with the power of “Sonic Scream”. He first appeared in X-Men #28 (1967) and has made a few appearanes throughout various runs since then. Cassidy is both a former NYPD officer as well as an Interpol agent. When Banshee works with the X-Men he is usually a full decade or more older than the other members of his team and is usually places in a mentor role.

Although the character appears in X-Men: First Class he is best known from his portrayal in the comics. And though the specifics of his costume have changed there are a few things that stay constant. His suit is always green with yellow markings on the chest. You can use fabric paint to get the exact markings you want so that you can choose which costume variation to go with.

His costumes also have yellow boots and yellow gloves as well as wings of some kind that attach under the arms, along the sides, and down the legs. These can be replicated using a large shawl such as the one pictured above. Older variations of Banshee also have him smoking a long-stemmed pipe, though this accessory fell out of use in the ’90s.

Kitty Pryde

Katherine “Kitty” Pryde, aka Shadowcat, is a member of the X-Men. Her powers include phasing and intangibility, which lets her simulate levitation. In the comics, she joins the Guardians of the Galaxy and actually takes over as Star Lord. In the Marauders series (not related to the Marauders in Harry Potter, but wouldn’t that be a cool crossover!), she’s currently known as Red Queen. The comics also highlight her Jewish heritage. And did you know her companion, a purple dragon named Lockheed, is actually a highly intelligent alien?

Mystique from X-Men

Mystique from X-Men

Misunderstood and bullied since childhood, blue-skinned shapeshifter Mystique (played onscreen by Jennifer Lawrence and Rebecca Romijn) truly understands anti-mutant oppression. Her early experiences of mistreatment shaped her stance in the fight for mutant equality — or even dominance, as her leader, Magneto, gravitates towards.

Mystique is easily remembered for her onscreen appearances wearing only the strategically-placed blue scales she was born with (requiring Rebecca Romijn to spend hours in the makeup room), but comic book portrayals have been slightly more favorable to cosplayers attending family-friendly venues. You could buy the blue jumpsuit and stop there, but I’ve included some additional garments which draw inspiration from my personal favorite Mystique look from the retro X-Men arcade game.

Beast Xmen

Beast from X-Men

Beast, or Dr. Hank McCoy, is a founding member of the X-Men. His powers as a mutant include super strength and heightened senses. Despite his animalistic appearance, Beast possesses brilliant intelligence, and can communicate eloquently. He is a professor at the Xavier Institute as well as an activist for the acceptance of mutants in society. This guide follows his comic book iteration. Use the blue paint to cover your entire face as well as to paint the pointed ears. Some appropriate additions might include a pair of glasses and a lab coat.

Phoenix / Jean Grey

A telepath and telekinetic whose powers rival that of Professor X’s, Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) of X-Men: The Last Stand is no longer the kind, sweet woman of the previous two movies. After drowning while saving the rest of the team, Jean is resuscitated by a dark, evil, extremely powerful force called the Phoenix. As the Phoenix, Jean Grey joins with Magneto in his battle against humans and her true potential is unleashed in a fiery fury, resulting in tragedy. The Phoenix wears all red, reflecting her connection to fire.

Bishop

In X-Men: Days of Future Past, Lucas Bishop (Omar Sy) is a mutant who travels from a dystopian future to join the X-Men in an attempt to redirect history and save the world. His power includes the ability to absorb and redirect kinetic energy.

Psylocke

In the X-Men, Psylocke (Olivia Munn), real name Betsy Braddock, is a mutant with telepathic and telekinetic powers that she can charge into deadly weapons. Not only is she a stealthy martial artist, but a former fashion model.

Emma Frost

Emma Frost is a telepath who possesses diamond hard skin making her both a mentally and physically tough adversary. She initially uses her powers to oppose the X-Men but after a Sentinel attack she joins their cause.

Storm

Storm (Halle Berry) is one of the mainstays of the X-Men. Originally from Kenya and named Ororo Munroe, she joins the superhero team after she discovers she has the ability to create tornadoes, thunderstorms, and hurricanes with her mind. All that humidity must wreak havoc on her hair.

Nightcrawler

Kurt Wagner, better known as Nightcrawler, is a mutant who has the ability to teleport and crawl on walls. He’s the son of Mystique and the demonic warlord Azazel. He spent his early years with the circus but was later recruited by the X-men.
